  • Hard work's payoff

    Mathew Brock|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS - As the auctioneer rapidly spat out bid numbers, youngsters wrangled and paraded their animals around the auction pen late into the night. The crowd clapped, hooted and hollered as the bids rose higher and higher, while the exhibitors readied themselves to reap the rewards of months of hard work. The Curry County Fair's Junior Livestock Auction kicked off Friday evening and lasted well into the night as 102 exhibitors showed off the cattle, swine, lamb and other...

  • Donation request a little tone-deaf

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 17, 2019

Imagine if your supervisor said you and your coworkers should each set aside $50 of your paycheck so the office can make a major purchase. The donation is voluntary, but there will be a list of who does donate (meaning you’ll also know who doesn’t donate). I don’t suppose it would matter how well-intentioned that money pooling was. Whether it be for donut Fridays, a Christmas party or helping a coworker befallen with medical expenses, you’d feel like you were being squeezed. Now imagine you’re not getting paid. That’s so...

  • Responsible reporting includes respect for the right to privacy

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Aug 17, 2019

We don’t usually report on personal disputes or private matters. Whether it’s a parent asking for help in locating a teenage runaway — who may or may not have a good reason for running away — or if it’s a customer unhappy with service at a for-profit business — who may or may not have a legitimate beef — experience tells us it’s a bad idea for the newspaper to get involved. Those who contact us on these matters seldom want us to tell the whole story, just the part they want known. Getting to the truth can be difficult. And...

  • Freshmen migrate onto ENMU campus

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Aug 17, 2019

PORTALES - It's not every day you get to watch a great migration of 600 freshman college students unload truckfuls of furniture, clothes and the rest of their personal items into the cramped dormitories they'll be inhabiting over the next year. Saturday morning saw the streets outside the various residence halls of Eastern New Mexico University packed with trucks and cars packed with cargo. Students and families led by councilors walked the campus, getting themselves...

  • Curry to finalize infrastructure plan

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 17, 2019

CLOVIS — The Curry County Commission plans to finalize its Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan during its regular meeting Tuesday morning. The ICIP is a document every municipality moves on to its state legislators, with hopes the projects identified receive capital outlay dollars in the upcoming legislative session. Municipalities often rank their top five projects, but include numerous others because legislators often will not fund projects that have not been identified on an ICIP. Curry County has identified nearly f...

  • Portales to review infrastructure plan

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 17, 2019

PORTALES — The Portales City Council on Tuesday is scheduled to review its 2020 to 2025 Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan. The meeting is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Priorities were discussed on Friday when the city held a public hearing on ICIP. After receiving no comments, the list was approved for review and approval during Tuesday’s meeting. At the top of the priority list are ongoing well-field improvements, followed by fire protection and water circulation upgrades from last year. A cemetery expansion and the acq...

The FBI arrested Gallegos Aug. 7 while he was already in custody on related state charges. Gallegos was indicted May 24 in the 9th Judicial District for first-degree fel...

  • Sandoval County treasurer throws hat in ring

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 17, 2019

CLOVIS — Sandoval County Treasurer Laura Montoya has been busy visiting New Mexico communities, dropping by county fairs, chatting in coffee shops and more to get in touch with the citizens she hopes to one day represent in Washington D.C. In her opinion, the divisiveness of the federal government has been distracting policy makers from what's really important: serving the people they represent. With 17 years of government experience at the federal, state and local levels, Montoya decided to run for New Mexico's 3rd C...

  • Rams impressive in scrimmage versus Robertson

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 17, 2019

PORTALES - On a night of many positives, the biggest one from Ram football might be that they expect to be a lot better. With eight days remaining before their season opener at Hope Christian, Portales generally outplayed Robertson in its home scrimmage and showed it expects to make a run for its second 4A title in four seasons and its fifth-consecutive year reaching at least the semifinal round. "I thought we did well on both sides of the ball," Portales coach Jaime Ramirez s...

  • A contest with some spice to it

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Aug 17, 2019

CLOVIS - Far from a starter, chips and salsa took center stage Friday night during the annual contest at the Curry County Fair. Made with a base of core ingredients - tomato, onion, garlic, salt and peppers - 21 entries competed at the fairgrounds' indoor pavilion for cash prizes and coveted salsa chef aprons from the event sponsor of seven years, Leal's Mexican Restaurant. "Everybody has their own style of salsa," said event announcer Jeff Lynn. "Sometimes, as soon as you tak...

  • ENMU whittles AD field to three

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 17, 2019

PORTALES — And then there were three. Eastern New Mexico University’s search for a new athletic director began with 38 candidates in early summer, and that has since been pared down by more than 90 percent. ENMU recently announced three finalists — Michael Scarano, John Lewis and Casey Lish — for the position, which came open in late June when then-athletic director Greg Waggoner submitted his resignation. All three finalists have been invited onto campus for in-person interviews, and are slated to be there this coming...

  • Residents asked to restrict water use

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 17, 2019

PORTALES — Officials do not expect shortages, but all the same they are requesting Portales residents restrict outside water use to only essentials next week while renovation work takes place. A rehabilitation of Johnson Hill Tank West, a project of several months, will involve re-piping and interruption to wellfield flow from Tuesday to Thursday this week, city manager Sammy Standefer told The News. Residents served by that wellfield — including those in Portales and some outside the city — will be instead served by a 6-mil...

  • Cats score four times in shortened scrimmage

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 17, 2019

RUIDOSO — Technically, Clovis scored four touchdowns to Las Cruces’ two. But the weather might have won the day Wednesday at Ruidoso High School. The second of two lightning delays led the Wildcats and Bulldawgs to just skip the goal-line situation portion of the battle, and each side got on the bus to make the long trip home from the neutral-site scrimmage. “It was a good battle,” Clovis coach Cal Fullerton said. “They got after it, we got after it. We had two lightning delays, so that was something we got to work with too,...

  • Fishing brings back good times, great memories

    Karl Terry|Updated Aug 17, 2019

Sadly, I haven’t been fishing at all this year. I did pick up my copy of “Even Brook Trout Get the Blues,” and do a little reading however. The first chapter of that book, by John Gierach, author of “Sex, Death, and Fly-Fishing,” describes his learning how to fish. Actually, he’s not certain of the details of the first fish he ever caught. I confess I would probably be right in that same boat. I might have been in a boat when I caught my first fish but I just can’t remember. G...
