CLOVIS — The issue of political signs and sponsorships at the Curry County Fair is set for discussion at today's County Commission meeting. In an email to County Manager Lance Pyle, Janemarie Vander Dussen, the Republican candidate for Division 1 magistrate court judge, wrote she was "concerned because only one political candidate seems to be availed the opportunity to pay for advertisement at the fair this year." According to an email from Pyle to the commission, Vander Dusse...
Warren Frost has long been convinced the race for New Mexico’s sixth racetrack/casino is between Clovis and Tucumcari. He is even more convinced now that the New Mexico Racing Commission has announced only five groups met last week’s deadline to apply for the racino license — three from Clovis, one from Tucumcari and one from Lordsburg. “This is all about Tucumcari and Clovis,” said the Quay County attorney who for more than a decade has been advocating for a racino in Tucumcari. “Lordsburg is much like Raton ... As routine as it may seem for the Texico and Melrose volleyball teams to compete for state championships, it’s not at all easy. Texico won its fourth straight 3A crown last year, finishing 21-4. Melrose made its fourth consecutive state-championship appearance and won its second title during that stretch, winding up 19-7. But state titles are a brick-by-brick construction job. The Lady Wolverines aren’t even looking ahead to a possible fifth title run in November yet. “I don’t pay attention to that,” Texico’s 10th-year h...

The haze over eastern New Mexico on Monday was not just cloudcover. Dan Heerding, emergency management director for the city of Clovis, said area residents were seeing wildfire smoke from California and other western states. “There’s nothing burning here that we know about,” Heerding said. There’s also nothing to worry about locally, according to Heerding and air-quality control officials. “I’m looking at the state website for air quality monitoring and everything is green (meaning good air quality) with the exception o... One involved a one-car accident on NM 206 that included a child with severe lacerations; an unrelated call involved an injured player at the Eastern New Mexico University football field...

Green said he was not sure what caused the break, noting the line is already slated to be replaced in the city’s next phase of water-line improvements in 2020.
