    Matt Weiner|Updated Aug 22, 2024

After coaching football in Texas for nearly three decades, Stan Hodges thought he would be fine retiring from it full-time to cash in on the oil industry in May of 2023. But there Hodges was, "bawling like a baby" in his 2022 Ford F-150, while driving through oil sites in west Texas' Permian Basin last summer because of how much he missed the job that gave him reward and fulfillment. "I was like, 'Man, I don't know if I can do this,'" he said he thought to himself. Turns out...

  • Wondering what my former coworkers are up to these days

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 20, 2024

I had an encounter with a new arrival to the High Plains the other day, someone who moved here from the Washington, D.C., area. The meeting jogged loose memories from when I lived in a rural part of that area, about 40 years ago. I remembered a radio station where I used to work, tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I wondered what some of my co-workers were up to here in the 21st century. I looked up Filomena (name’s changed). There she was, here in the future, chief executive officer of a li’l ol’ DC area compa...

  • Faith: Real holiness is centered on God, not me

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Aug 20, 2024

A rustler’s moon. I’m told that’s what cowboys used to call a quarter moon. It was bright enough that a rustler could see to carry out his cattle filching, but it was not so bright as to spotlight his thievery. But here’s a fact likely lost on all but your most astronomically gifted cattle rustlers: Be it quarter moon, half moon, 13/16 moon, or blue moon, not a single photon of “the light of the silvery moon” is its own; every ray is actually the light of the blazing sun...

"We have some returning guys from last year's team who are super-hungry. They're trying to work at their...

  • Opinion: Trump needs to shape up for campaign

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 20, 2024

For Democrats this historic election is about only one issue – Trump. Whoever wins the White House, it won’t be because of issues like high inflation, trillion-dollar annual budget deficits or the humiliation of Afghanistan. It’s going to come down to one simple but big thing: How many Americans love Kamala Harris and how many hate Donald Trump. Democrats know that if they can convince voters to hate Trump more than they hate high interest rates, higher taxes and the open bord...

  • Opinion: Combating food insecurity only humane

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 20, 2024

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and his fellow Democrats ratified ample changes during the two years they’ve had control of the Minnesota Legislature -- from expansions of abortion and LGBTQIA+ rights to tax credits and other forward initiatives aimed at making life easier for families. Walz has been an activist governor of Minnesota with a strong progressive agenda. And I’d like to focus on one key element of that agenda: requiring public and charter sch...

  • Opinion: Kamala Harris should articulate policy plans for moderate alternative

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 20, 2024

Since President Joe Biden ducked out of the presidential race last month, Vice President Kamala Harris has made steady gains against Donald Trump in most polls. If she wants that lead to endure past a honeymoon phase, she’ll need to articulate an agenda that appeals to persuadable but as-yet-undecided voters. The positions that will work most effectively just happen to be exactly those the country needs. No doubt, Harris has reason to hesitate before adopting any such approach. As ever, Trump is his own worst enemy. The v...
