  • Read a book and remember

Our small town will forever be haunted by the tragic events that occurred at the Clovis-Carver Public Library on Aug. 28, 2017. But last year was not the first time our community pulled together to heal in the face of tragedy. Upon hearing the initial reports of the library shooting, my mind instantly flashed back to my friend Matthew Roberts. He disappeared from his home in Clovis in 1990 and I remember watching the adults spending countless hours searching for him and... Full story

  • A few last words before I leave you, friends

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Aug 27, 2018

This is my 441st and final column for The Eastern New Mexico News. I have moved and am stepping aside as a “local columnist” to repurpose my keyboard for other endeavors. The first is a parody of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” I’m calling “Jonathan Livingston the Gullible.” Although some readers have told me where I’m going to spend eternity, most have been supportive. Whether they showered me with bricks or bouquets, my sincere thank you to all. Now, some final thoughts:... Full story

  • Too cheesy? Not by a long shot

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Aug 26, 2018

Who really wanted a bowl of cactus anyway? You may have missed it, because a college football coach got less punishment for mishandling abuse allegations than his players would get for selling game-worn shoes. There’s a new bowl sponsor in town, and it’s amazing. The bowl game formerly known as the Cactus Bowl is now the Cheez-It Bowl, as part of a multi-year partnership between the snack food, the Big 12 and Pac 12 — the conferences that each send a representative to play there annually. The sponsorship was announced via p...

  • Wahlman made big impact on our little village

    Karl Terry|Updated Aug 26, 2018

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but a village blessed by a gentle giant who made it his mission to properly raise the children of the village is going to turn out good citizens. The entire Portales community lost a teacher, mentor, coach and role model when Bill Wahlman died last week. Wahlman taught school for 36 years in Portales, 25 of them in the same classroom at L.L. Brown Elementary. By the time he had finished coaching tennis at Portales High School he... Full story

  • Clovis boys' soccer team moves to 4-0

The Staff of the News|Updated Aug 26, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — The soccer season is a process, and it’s hard to get too excited or upset about anything in the first week-plus of action. Still, the process has been good for the Clovis boys by any metric. They haven’t seen the friendly confines of Leon Williams Stadium yet, but the Wildcats are 3-0 and have yet to trail this year following Saturday’s 3-1 win over Hope Christian. “We’re just taking it game by game and trying to improve on the things we do well,” Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said of the Wildcats’ first 3-0 start...

  • War hero, presidential candidate John McCain has died

    Associated Press|Updated Aug 26, 2018

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain, who faced down his captors in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp with jut-jawed defiance and later turned his rebellious streak into a 35-year political career that took him to Congress and the Republican presidential nomination, died Saturday after battling brain cancer for more than a year. He was 81. McCain, with his irascible grin and fighter-pilot moxie, was a fearless and outspoken voice on policy and politics to the end, unswerving in his defense of democratic values and unflinching in his c...

  • Clovis observes library shooting anniversary

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 26, 2018

CLOVIS — Tuesday marks a solemn occasion: the first anniversary of Clovis' deadly library shooting, perpetrated, police say, by a teenager charged as an adult with murder and facing trial next year. For the day itself, the city has planned a morning observance to feature a moment of silence honoring the two librarians slain during the incident, along with the four people injured and countless others affected directly or indirectly in a year of shock, frustration and trickling... Full story

  • Fair sale tops last year

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 26, 2018

PORTALES — The Junior Livestock Sale at the Roosevelt County Fair edged last year's results in terms of total sales as 58 kids entered the show ring on Friday night and left with some well-earned cash. Roosevelt County Junior Livestock Sale Committee Secretary Joy Levacy said Friday's sale total was $134,975, up from the $128,024 collected last year. The highest sale belonged to Portales' Klayt Hamilton, 11, who's steer Waldo went for $8,000, which Klayt said he would put t...

  • Murder didn't happen in Portales then

    Betty Williamson|Updated Aug 26, 2018

Editor's note: Portales druggist Elbert Muncy was murdered 50 years ago. This is the second of a two-part story that began in last Sunday's paper. It's been 50 years since the murder of Elbert Muncy. For Waide Davis, it seems like it was yesterday. Davis was only 27 when he was elected to his first term as sheriff of Roosevelt County in 1964. He was 32 and within months of finishing his second term on Aug. 18, 1968, when he learned that his friend, Muncy, had been killed. The... Full story

  • Hound volleyball drops to 0-4

The Staff of the News|Updated Aug 25, 2018

CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico volleyball team didn’t have the Saturday it had hoped for, dropping a pair by 3-1 scores in the conclusion of the BritKare Lady Buff Classic, falling first to Lubbock Christian and then to Rockhurst. The opener was more hard-fought than a 3-1 score might indicate, each set a battle that came close to the end to decide. ENMU won the first set 25-22, before Lubbock Christian won the next three sets, two of which needed extra points to be decided and all of which were decided by two poi...

  • Prep soccer: Portales girls net first win

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 25, 2018

ROSWELL — The Portales girls soccer team ended the Roswell Tournament on a high note on Saturday, recording a 1-0 victory over Lovington. For the Rams, it was their first win of the young 2018 season. It was an eighth grader, Adeli Hernandez, who was responsible for the only goal of the match, which was scored in the 33rd minute. Senior Rebekah Christiansen provided the assist. Coach Ruben Tellez felt Portales had a good quantity of scoring chances, but still needs to work on quality. “We had six breakaway touches,” Telle...

  • Balanced scoring propels Clovis girls again

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 25, 2018

TAOS — It took the opposition four games to notch a goal against the Clovis High girls soccer team. It took the Wildcats just one minute to negate it. Madison Lynch scored her third goal of the season to give Clovis a 3-1 lead after Bosque’s Aviva Elliott broke the Wildcat shutout streak, and three other players found the net in a 4-1 victory over Bosque to close out the Taos Tournament. Annie Stone and Danielle Griego each had a pair of assists for Clovis (4-0), which will head into Thursday’s game at Artesia with plent...

  • Rams reload for 2018

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 25, 2018

PORTALES — While Portales’ volleyball team is young, coach Charity Gomez believes that it can compete with anybody as long as it stays principled. Gomez’ squad returns just two starters in senior Taylee Rippee and junior Aaliyah Austin for 2018. “We just have a program philosophy,” Gomez said. “There’s a few things that win volleyball games, and we feel that it doesn’t matter what age they are, because everyone does the same drills (within our program). “We’re drilling...

  • Changes aplenty for CHS volleyball

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 25, 2018

CLOVIS — This past Thursday afternoon, Clovis High’s volleyball coach Ruth Chavez had the opportunity to watch a junior high scrimmage at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, giving her a glimpse into her varsity team’s future. Actually, her most experienced varsity players haven’t been out of junior high that long. Only two return from last year’s varsity and they’re both sophomores — middle blocker/back row Mikyla Harkley and setter Kameron Kelley. Clovis does have quite a few seniors, but they’re all varsity newcomers. Graduation cert...

  • Rams stopped short to end marathon night

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 25, 2018

PORTALES — An 80-minute weather delay. Five fumbles, two of them lost. Five second-half penalties. Missed chances in the red zone. Indeed, it was an odd night for Portales football in its 2018 season opener against Hope Christian on Friday night. Quarterback Vince Quezada found Jake Cosper wide open in the flat on third-and-goal for the game’s only touchdown, and the Huskies defense held on for a 10-3 win that put Portales at 0-1 for the first time since 2014. Whether it be the weather, first-night jitters, inexperience — or...

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 25, 2018

PORTALES — On Saturday morning, spectators at the Roosevelt County Fair got to meet Slimy, Larry, Tiny, Gary, Goliath and Bob — each one of them a newly-christened blue ribbon snail, in company with various critters presented by about two dozen children during the Portales Kiwanis Club’s annual Pet Show. Erika Cooke, 12, of Clovis, said she had a seventh snail named Simon but gave him to her cousins. She and her 10-year-old brother William both participated in the show, which presented an opportunity for kids to show off t...
