CLOVIS - While several major airlines nationwide are placing restrictions on what animals can fly on their planes, a non-profit animal rescue group based out of Jackson, Wyoming, is catering flights exclusively for dogs and cats. And it will be bringing its plane to Clovis for the first time on Monday. Since its creation in 2012, founder Peter Rork said Dog Is My Copilot has rescued more than 10,000 animals from shelters where they would otherwise be euthanized; instead they...
CLOVIS — After some back and forth among lawyers last month as to their joined cases possibly being severed, three airmen accused of raping a colleague early this year in Clovis are still due this afternoon for a pre-trial conference. Their trial together is scheduled in October. The state’s motion to sever was filed July 16, following the receipt of DNA analysis from the state crime lab and review of phone calls made by Thomas Newton, 25, Isaiah Edley, 20, and Rahman Buchanan, 19, while the three were in custody on cha...
CLOVIS — Thanks to a new grant from the state of New Mexico, Clovis Municipal Schools is offering a district-wide preschool program at each elementary school site for the first time this year. Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Joe Strickland said CMS did have a preschool program in years past, but it was primarily for developmentally delayed students; otherwise parents had to pay for their child to participate. With 276 students currently enrolled in the free, optional p... Full story
NOTE TO READERS: There will be a delay in delivery of Thursday's edition (Aug. 30) of The News. A very serious traffic accident on U.S. 84 between Santa Rosa and Fort Sumner halted traffic for at least four hours this morning. This delayed our delivery truck with the papers from Santa Fe. We should receive papers at our office by 8 a.m. and carriers will be dispatched after that. We apologize for the delay. -- Rob Langrell, Publisher... Full story
CLOVIS — Both Clovis cross country teams, boys and girls, see the program’s move to District 4-5A as an opportunity. Competing as they did in recent years against mostly 6A Albuquerque schools provided a good test but brutal competition. 4-5A, though highly competitive, should offer Clovis a chance to fare better this season, especially the boys, who placed fourth in 6A last year as it was. With a strong, experienced contingent back and looking for greater achievements, Clo... Full story
PORTALES — When new Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer coach Jon Fridal was asked about the biggest difference between Division II soccer and junior college soccer, he felt it was almost an impossible question. Because of the parity across all of college soccer, he reasoned, one juco program may compete with Division-I schools while others would struggle just to stay with an average Division-II school. What’s not up for debate is when it comes to Division II, the Greyhounds are i...

CLOVIS — A mother-daughter pair were hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday morning after a car hit their truck parked on the side of a road just northwest of Clovis, according to Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller. Lacy Smith, 39, of Clovis and her 16-year old daughter were transported first to Plains Regional Medical Center and then to a Lubbock hospital after the impact, which occurred around 8:10 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 245 and Curry Road M. The two women were ejected from a 2000 Chevrolet pickup p...
PORTALES — As far as soccer standings go in the Lone Star Conference, one point is a little nicer than zero. But three points is a lot nicer than one. Turning ties into wins might just be one of the biggest goals for the Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team, as new coach Joshua Smith aims to continue the Greyhounds’ ascent in the Lone Star Conference. Eastern’s 7 p.m. tilt against St. Mary’s marks the first season for Smith, hired after Ryan Spence departed to take the...
On this date ... 1968: Firefighters spent five hours battling a blaze at Diamonds LTD, located at 316 Main St. in Clovis. A passerby called in the fire shortly before midnight. "The blaze caused such intense heat that the windows melted," said Norman Petty, who owned the store. Officials said a short circuit in a window display probably caused the fire. Petty said everything near the front of the building sustained extensive damage, while smoke damage was evident throughout...
The new school year is underway. Teachers, staff, and students have returned with high expectations for a new year of learning, and we hit the ground running. The world we now live in is different from the world of even a few years ago, presenting new challenges. Trying to solve problems with “old-school” solutions doesn’t necessarily work. Albert Einstein’s definition nails it: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Today’s cla...
