  • Opinion: Raiders must walk McGuire's big talk

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Aug 29, 2023

Nothing like August for college football fans. Except for a few early starters, every team is undefeated. The traditional good teams are going to reload. Those believed to be so-so just need a few kind bounces of the ball to win eight games. The also-rans, well, some teams are going to surprise this year – why not us? Then there are the ones who had a breakthrough season in 2022, return almost a fully loaded roster to build on that, and just know they have left those losing w...

  • Faith: Caught the political bug from my sister

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Aug 29, 2023

In my email recently was a survey from the U.S. congressman from the district where I live. One of the main questions had to do with the first Republican presidential debate that was held Aug. 23 in Milwaukee. Of course, a basic question was (I paraphrase): Did you watch the debate, the rival interview offered at the same time, or neither? I watched the debate. I couldn’t not; I’m interested. I’ve said before that the day I look forward to a repeat of the choice we faced...

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 29, 2023

PORTALES – If any of Eastern New Mexico University's volleyball, men's or women's soccer or men's or women's cross country teams accomplish much this fall, it will be a surprise to the Lone Star Conference. "I'm not really worried about p...

  • Opinion: Nikki Haley only breakout in debate

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 29, 2023

As usual, there was too much cross-talk and chaos on stage. And there was way too much partisan cheering and hooting by the audience. But the first Republican presidential primary debate on Fox News was an entertaining spectacle. Instead of watching Tucker Carlson interview Donald Trump on Twitter/X, it was a good way to check out the personalities and political positions of the GOP’s lineup of second and third stringers who have the impossible dream of beating out Trump f...

  • Cats, still seeking first victory, host Randall

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 29, 2023

CLOVIS – Pre-district play has been a little bit like Murderer’s Row for Clovis High’s football team the past couple of seasons. Last year, the Wildcats went 0-6 and were outscored 265-64 prior to the start of their District 6-5A schedule, then won three in a row to challenge for a playoff berth before losing at Los Lunas 54-0 in their finale. This season has started off 0-2 heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup with Canyon Randall at Leon Williams Stadium, but coach Andrew McCraw sees some encouraging signs. “We did some...

  • Publisher's journal: Readers write about parrots, Bluitt, more

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 29, 2023

My electronic mailbox was loaded with thought-provoking correspondence this month. Well, some of it anyway. Here’s a sampling: So many questions unanswered Bill Hailer of Portales has a few complaints. He said he read the “puff piece” we did with Portales Public Utility Director John DeSha. “He did not answer anything.” Hailer wrote that the press used to hold government accountable. “Now it’s just a parrot for the government.” Hailer wrote that he’s not had much luck with getting answers from Portales city officials either....

  • Opinion: Time for all-above approach to education

    Paul Gessing, Guest columnist|Updated Aug 29, 2023

New Mexico should be in crisis mode. Our K-12 education system is certainly facing a crisis. Problems abound: recent reports highlight serious school attendance issues, the NAEP (known as the “Nation’s Report Card”) test places New Mexico 52nd across ALL age groups and subjects studied, the Kids Count report shows New Mexico kids are losing ground, and no one seems to have a solution. Education spending has increased markedly in recent years with nothing to show for it. With...

Happy Labor Day weekend. Here are some great activities going on: • The Clovis Senior Center is holding an “English Tea” event at 2 p.m. Friday. This is more than just tea; it’s an opportunity to share stories, make new friends, and bask in the joy of toge...

  • Rogue scout troop goes camping

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 29, 2023

Starting about the time I was 12, I belonged to a “rogue scout troop.” Of course, back in the day I didn’t know my troop was a rogue troop, but over the years it became clear I was in a group where the adult leaders’ drinking whiskey and beer and getting away from their wives for the weekend was their priority, not by-the-book scoutin’. The names are all changed and I’m not going to be exact about the name of the scoutin’ organization. About once a month our troop would go on camping or backpacking trips into the mountaino...

Weems said Monday this year's fair seemed a lot more organized than in previous years; several festivities were relocated for easier access by guests and employees. He said he had received a lot of positive feedback from guests in moving photography and...

  • 'Substantial' oil, gas strike predicted

Ron Warnick, The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 29, 2023

Tommy Wallace is hopeful his ranch in southern Quay County sits amid a substantial field of oil, natural gas and helium that could produce dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of well-paying jobs. Wallace said in a phone interview last week that Louisiana-based Moran-Lavaca is “pretty sure” a substantial amount of helium exists on his property off Norton Road and at a recently drilled spot near Grady. He said he learned about the strike about six months ago. The Grady area well is on property owned by Elmer White, White con...
