  • Secretary of State announces plans for straight-party voting

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 31, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE— New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver on Wednesday announced her plans to bring back straight-party voting for the Nov. 6 general election. Reaction has largely been consistent across party lines. Rube Render, a Clovis city commissioner and the Curry County Republican chairman, said straight-party voting negatively targets Republicans but really is a bad idea for all parties. “As the Republican Party chairman, I think that is done specifically to hurt Republicans,” Render said. “I believe that voti... Full story

  • Country church reminder of parents' faith

    Judy Brandon|Updated Aug 31, 2018

Not long ago, we had the opportunity to make a trip to western Missouri. My goal was to locate a church where Daddy was pastor when I was a child. I didn't even know if it still existed, but thanks to the Internet and GPS, I found the way to get there. Tucked away among lush growth and tree-populated hills, the little church still sits on a rise, far away from fast moving culture and society. As we followed the GPS and went down road after winding road, we came to a hill....

  • The spokes of a wheel are nearest at the axle

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 31, 2018

My favorite columnist, Charles Krauthammer, passed away in June. When I (very often) miss his wit, wisdom, common sense, and uncommon command of the English language, I pull out his book, “Things That Matter,” a compilation of some of his best columns. One of those was written in 1999 shortly after Time magazine had named Albert Einstein as the “Person of the Century.” An “interesting and solid choice,” Krauthammer wrote, albeit a wrong one. “The only possible answer,” he c...

  • Miners best Greyhounds 31-14 in football opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 31, 2018

ROLLA, Mo.— In the 2017 season, Eastern New Mexico University led Division II in rushing and time of possession with a ball-control game that was rarely bested. But this is the 2018 season, and Missouri S&T topped the Greyhounds in both categories and dominated most of the evening with a 31-14 victory Thursday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Tyler Swart completed 21 of 30 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns as the Miners ripped off a 24-0 start. The first touchdown indicated it might not be the Greyhounds' night, as E...

  • Clovis volleyball team loses season opener

The Staff of the News|Updated Aug 31, 2018

ARTESIA — Clovis’ volleyball team, like any team would, came with optimism into Thursday night’s season opener at Artesia. It’s only one game, but it was not the outcome Clovis had hoped for. The Lady Wildcats were swept 3-0 — 25-14, 25-17, 25-22. Despite losing, the scores did get progressively closer as the game went on. And Ruth Chavez spotted positives as she began her second season as Lady Wildcats head coach. “I think we served well and did some good things,” Chavez said. But, losing a plethora of last year’s player...

  • State official: Curry Commissioner Baca off ballot

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 31, 2018

CLOVIS— Angelina Baca, the District 1 Curry County commissioner and the winner of the July primary in her re-election bid, will not appear on the ballot for the general election on Nov. 6, a spokesman for New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver told The News on Thursday. John Blair, communications officer for the secretary of state, said the office determined on Thursday that Baca was ineligible because she failed to meet Tuesday's deadline to pay a $1,200 fine le... Full story

  • ENMU men take soccer opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 30, 2018

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico and Southern Nazarene both knew they’d be entering this season in somewhat of a rebuilding mode. The Greyhounds showed Thursday they’re a lot further in the process, building a 2-0 lead less than 17 minutes in, en route to a 3-1 victory at Greyhound Stadium in the season opener for both teams and the first game under new coach Jon Fridal. Lucas Vaz had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds, who posted a 9-1 shooting advantage in the first half....

  • Clovis playing corner route

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 30, 2018

CLOVIS — It wasn’t an ordinary Thursday for the Clovis High football team. Then again, this is no ordinary weekend for the Wildcats. Thursday, instead of spending the late afternoon hours practicing at Leon Williams Stadium, the ’Cats were getting ready to board a bus in the Clovis High School parking lot. Because tonight, instead of the road trips to Albuquerque, Lubbock or Hobbs they’re used to, the Wildcats are playing at Aztec, in the state’s northwest corner more than... Full story

  • Rams seek revenge against Horsemen

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 30, 2018

PORTALES — Football is a game of inches, and last year’s St. Mike’s-Portales football game is no exception. The Rams rallied to score a late touchdown, cutting their road deficit down to 21-20. However, quarterback Tyrese Dawson’s keeper to the right pylon on the go-ahead two-point conversion attempt was marked just short of the end zone. It was a close call, no matter how you saw it, and it allowed the Horsemen to hang on for the big September victory in Santa Fe. Some sa...

Texico (1-0) at Dexter (1-0), 7 p.m. today Last week: Both teams won their openers on the road last Friday. The Demons topped Santa Rosa 21-14. Texico took a 30-20 win at Eunice. Texico coach Pat Crowley said the Wolverines gave great energy and effort against Eunice, and he was surprised how well they communicated on defense so early in the season. Last meeting: 2017, Dexter swept a pair of games, 26-7 in the regular season and 36-13 in the Class 3A first round. What to look out for: Demons quarterback Jarren Amaro...

  • Run, Rams, run

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 30, 2018

PORTALES — It’s a new era for Ram athletics, as Portales has not only experienced a number of new coaching hires this year, but will also trot out a new athletics program — cross country. It will be the first time in several years that the Rams have featured such a program. For coach Michael Aunan, there’s a simple philosophy that he wants his athletes to abide by. “Compete. I think that’s gonna be our program slogan, from here on out,” Aunan said. “Compete. It doesn’t matter who you race against, you find somebody and you tr...

  • Attorneys expect delay in airmen trial

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 30, 2018

CLOVIS — It’s been more than seven months since three young men stationed at Cannon Air Force Base were arrested and charged with raping a colleague at a house party in Clovis. Their lawyers said Thursday in court that preparation for their joint trial might still take longer than the forecasted Oct. 15 start date, possibly bringing the case into the new year. Since the trial is scheduled for five days and requires coordination with the schedules of three defense attorneys (in addition to prosecutors and a crowded court doc...

  • Clovis man sentenced to five years

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 30, 2018

CLOVIS — A Clovis man convicted last week of receiving a stolen motorcycle was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison followed by six months probation. Phillip Little, 48, told Judge Matthew Chandler during the sentencing hearing that he’d “had a pretty bad drug problem” during the past 20 years but was recently engaged and trying to turn his life around. “I’m not a violent person,” he said. “I just ask that the court show me a little bit of mercy.” Chandler presided over the one-day trial Aug. 21 when a jury found Litt...
