    Dave Wagner

PORTALES — It didn’t take long — just two matches — for the first-year Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer program to break into the win column. ENMU coaches Carlos Elizondo and Travis McCorkle thought it could’ve been even sooner. The Greyhounds scored just 61 seconds into their history on Friday at Texas Wesleyan, before settling for a 1-1 tie with the Rams after two overtimes. They left no doubt on Saturday, though, scoring the first three goals in a 3-1 win at Dallas Baptist. “One of the reasons I thought we ti...

And then he saw something embedded in a whiskey bottle-sized boulder. “I’m looking at this and I really don’t know what it is so I call the paleontologist over and he goes berserk, like it was a fantastic find,” the 54-year-old Clovis dentist said. Axel Hungerbuehler, a Ph.D natural science instructor and curator at the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum...

  • PHS spikers open home slate tonight

    Dave Wagner

Portales High sophomore Morgan Erf is making a big jump this season for the Lady Rams volleyball squad. Coming up from the freshman team last year, the defensive specialist is adjusting to life on the varsity for the defending Class 3A state champions. But she said it’s not that big a deal. “That was my goal,” she said. “It’s been fun. It’s a lot different, faster-paced. “I played with the varsity over the summer. At first I was a little nervous, but I’m over that. I’m confident I can do it, and my teammates have he...

(Staff photo by Rick White) When Clovis senior Kendal Essex spied Roswell Goddard’s goalkeeper out of position early in the second half he didn’t hesitate to take a shot at the net — even at 25 yards out.
