AZTEC — At times last season, Clovis’ football team had trouble putting games away. Not a problem so far this year, especially in Friday night’s road game against Aztec. The Wildcats came away with a 49-20 victory after leading only 28-20 at the start of the fourth quarter. The running of Andrew Jaramillo and DeMarco Fitch made the difference, with Jaramillo bulling for several big first downs and a short touchdown in the fourth quarter and Fitch adding two in that perio... CLOVIS — Three weeks since the short-lived escape of a female jail inmate, officials filed charges on twin brothers for allegedly aiding in the effort. Police say Donald Gibson, 39, picked up Kaitlyn Martinez-Arington, 26, moments after her escape on Aug. 6 and drove her around trying to find his brother before dropping her off near Hillcrest Park and meeting up with investigators to deny any involvement. David Gibson, 39, was arrested the following morning after police found him hiding in a Clovis apartment with M...
PORTALES — The Portales Rams scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions against St. Mike’s on Friday night to earn their first win of 2018. Portales quarterback Julian Urioste went 5-of-7 for 66 yards in the air and had both a passing touchdown and rushing touchdown in the first half of the 21-6 victory. “Yeah, that was nice. Three possessions, scored three touchdowns — that’s how you draw it up,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said, smiling. “You want to take the b...
LOS ALAMOS - Clovis' boys soccer team kept rolling Friday afternoon, with lots of help from Elias Ortega. The senior striker pulled off a hat trick - scoring all three goals in the first half - as the Wildcats took care of Goddard 5-1 in the Louie Cernicek Tournament and improved to 4-0. Ortega scored in the fifth minute, the 20th and the 38th, helping Clovis take a 3-1 halftime lead. Kunal Puppalla and Jose Valladares scored Clovis' other two goals. "It was a good win,"...
FLOYD — Carrizozo’s “school yard” offense proved to be too tricky for Floyd, in the Broncos’ 2018 football opener on Friday afternoon. Floyd allowed 12 plays of 10 or more yards in the 64-30 defeat. “The good was we played hard. The bad was we had too many mental breakdowns. Not by one player, but usually one player per play,” Broncos coach Steve Foust said of his team. “We had a couple of good plays, and then a mental breakdown would hurt us. I thought we executed pretty well for a first game — effort was there. “Offense w...
CLOVIS — Only one day into the 2018 season and the Clovis boys cross country team is already making an impact. The Wildcats, set on eventually doing some damage at the district and state meets, began their regular season Friday by hosting the Clovis Invitational at Ned Houk Park. Teams came from far north, far south. They came from across the border in Texas. But Clovis’ boys bested them all, winning the meet with 30 points. Defending champion Hobbs was second this time wit...
ARTESIA — Clovis’ volleyball team, like any team would, came with optimism into Thursday night’s season opener at Artesia. It’s only one game, but it was not the outcome Clovis had hoped for. The Lady Wildcats were swept 3-0 — 25-14, 25-17, 25-22. Despite losing, the scores did get progressively closer as the game went on. And Ruth Chavez spotted positives as she began her second season as Lady Wildcats head coach. “I think we served well and did some good things,” Chavez said. But, losing a plethora of last year’s players to...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico and St. Mary’s both had plenty of offensive opportunities, especially for an early-season game. However, there weren’t many conversions, and the teams left Greyhound Stadium Thursday with a 1-all tie in the season opener for both teams. St. Mary’s got on the board first, with Miranda Narvaez finding Alexia Maldonado, who beat Greyhound keeper Taylor Jackson in the 29th minute. The Greyhounds answered back in the second half, as Hayden Zuniga beat Cameron Koerner 18 minutes into the half. Neither...
PORTALES— Rams volleyball spent all summer preparing for their opening match against Roswell. However, Thursday night's showdown didn't quite go as planned for Portales. Roswell swept the match in three sets, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19. "For the first game, we started off with lots of energy, we were up. I think we were up in every set, and then we just go through a string of attack errors, or just dumb plays," Rams coach Charity Gomez explained. "I don't know what to call them. J...
AUSTIN, Texas — It took the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team a little bit of time to get going on Friday morning, but they eventually built enough momentum to grab their first win of the season. The Greyhounds, for the third time this season, forced a fifth set after trailing 0-2. But this time, Eastern finished things off strong and topped Purdue Northwest 18-25, 24-26, 25-17, 26-24, 15-4. Sophomore Jasmine Gannon had 16 kills and three blocks to lead the Greyhounds, who t...
CLOVIS — The Curry County Events Center is going to be busy with barrels this weekend, as racers from across the country are set to compete in this weekend’s multi-level Double Dash. Producer Angie Moore, a 1994 graduate of Portales High School, loves the weekend as a chance to come home from her present home in Canyon, even though she’s pretty busy throughout the two-day event. More than 400 barrel racers are expected. “I grew up running barrels,” Moore said, “and I was a junior rodeo secretary for a couple of years. I go...
CLOVIS - The phrases may sound like they are straight out of a fortune cookie: • The grass is greener when you water it; • Don't regret the past, learn from it; • Live what you love. But the messages are rock solid. Literally. The uplifting messages are painted on rocks located outside Clovis-Carver Public Library. Clovis Civic Center General Manager Misty Bertrand said the #Clovisrocks campaign started prior to last August's deadly library shooting, after which the rocks... Full story
PORTALES — Two years after his arrest for selling drugs to undercover agents, a Portales man was convicted Friday of two second-degree felonies and faces 18 years in prison, according to a news release from District Attorney Andrea Reeb. A Roosevelt County jury found Armando Pena, 40, guilty of two counts of trafficking methamphetamine, returning a “quick verdict” after “many long delays” in the case, said the release. Pena was one of nine arrested through “a sting operation targeting the sale of drugs and thefts,” it...
