SANTA FE — The Portales Rams have traveled well this season. They won’t have to do it again for a while. Two road games so far this season for Portales. Two road victories for Portales, the most recent a 49-6 drubbing of St. Michael’s Saturday at Christian Brothers Field. Senior Wromiah Gbassagee scored four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving, as the Rams (2-0) never trailed and spent the entire fourth quarter with a mercy-rule running clock against the Horsemen (0-2). “We did a good job,” Portales coach Jaime Ram...
CLOVIS — Considering the temperature, every runner in Friday’s Clovis Invitational — be it varsity, junior varsity or middle school — should’ve received a medal just for showing up and braving the heat. It was cooking at Ned Houk Park, even for the cross country meet’s spectators and volunteers, much worse still for the runners. Some satisfaction did come out of the race, especially for Hobbs, whose teams won both the boys and girls varsity competitions. Especially...
PORTALES — If Labor Day weekend doesn’t make you think about college football, it’s probably a good bet you’re not a football fan. Even one of the NCAA’s several hundred college football teams, Eastern New Mexico, was thinking about watching some other college football games after Saturday morning’s practice at Greyhound Stadium. For the Greyhounds themselves, the fun hasn’t quite started. But Saturday they were just a week away from stepping out onto that same turf field for...
CLOVIS — Clovis head volleyball coach Ruth Chavez did promise that her team would be scrappy this year. And the Lady Wildcats did indeed exhibit said scrappiness in Thursday’s season opener against Artesia at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. But all scrappiness aside, there was the little matter of the final score — 3-1 in Artesia’s favor, with set results for Clovis of 9-25, 8-25, 25-23 and 10-25. There was a stirring third-set comeback, just when it seemed the Lady Wildcats would e...
CLOVIS — After a Week 1 game was shortened by a nasty storm, it was Clovis High’s football team bringing the thunder and lightning in Friday’s Week 2 matchup against Los Lunas at Leon Williams Stadium. Clovis’ defense first had to stave off some storm clouds, while the Wildcats’ offense was off to a slow start. Then a late-second-quarter offensive surge carried over into the second half, and the defense remained stout, leading the ’Cats to a 30-15 victory that allowed them to...
CLOVIS — To say the Clovis girls soccer team is off to a dominant start would be understating it. After winning Thursday night’s home opener 3-1 over Artesia at Yucca Middle School, the Lady Wildcats improved to 5-0. And they had won those five games by a combined score of 36-2. Dominant start? You think? “They’re playing together,” Clovis head coach Traci Sievers said. “I’ve had to move a lot of people around; we’ve had some injuries. But it seems like everybody’s willing to play like they’re adapting to adversity pretty we...
It was an inspiring if not victorious Week 2 for Texico. For Farwell, it was a Week 1 the Steers will probably want to forget. The Wolverines played their home opener against an elite Dexter program Friday night and were dealt a heartbreaking 21-15 loss after leading well into the fourth quarter. Over the state line in Friona, the Steers were suffering a 61-6 season-opening defeat. Dexter 21, Texico 15 Texico’s first-year head coach Bob Gilbreath knew what his Wolverines were facing when looking ahead to Dexter’s visit — a...

PORTALES - Affording healthcare is one thing, accessing it another. In a visit Wednesday to Roosevelt General Hospital, U.S. Rep. Access to healthcare Torres Small said, was part of her path to election in 2018. Referring services to larger hospitals out of town still happens, RGH staff agreed...
Editor's note: Marlowe J. Churchill's family secrets have been largely buried since 1926. His search for truth brought him to Parmer County in 2017 and he recently completed a manuscript detailing the violent death of his great aunt and her eight children, who are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery south of Farwell. This is the second of a three-part excerpt from his unpublished book. The series continues Wednesday. George Hassell's documented life story was disappointingly brief...
