The Eastern New Mexico University’s annual Fall Fine Arts Events calendar includes faculty and guest recitals, plays, art shows and concerts. “I think this is probably the fullest calendar we’ve had booked for fall in a while,” said Joyce Stagg, secretary for the dean of the fine arts department at ENMU. New this season is Tres Vidas, which celebrates the lives of three Latin American women, Stagg said. Returning for the second year is the Harmony for Humanity concert. The concert is one of several held across the United...
Enrollment numbers are down this semester at Clovis Community College because of the transition at Cannon Air Force Base and a low unemployment rate, officials said. “If it stayed where it is right now, it would be down about 6.8 percent (from last year),” said Vice President for Institution Effectiveness Robert Caffey. Enrollment numbers in the third week of school are more representative of semester enrollment due to late adds and drops, school officials said. About 1,500 full-time students enrolled this semester, he sai... Full story
Grant Shanahan has a lot on his plate. The 22-year-old Albuquerque native holds down a part-time job in Clovis, while taking 15 hours toward a business administration and economics degree at Eastern New Mexico University and he’s volunteering 15-20 hours per week to help coach the Portales Ram soccer team. “It’s a great help to me,” assistant coach Scott Parker said. “This is my first year coaching soccer. I’ve coached for 27 years, but never soccer.” Shanahan has been playing soccer since he was 5 years old, first in Albuque...
I sure hope no one needs an ambulance or firetruck in the future, because there may not be anyone on board. The rejection of the fire department pay increase by the Clovis City Commission is just plain stupid. If the proposal by Chief Ray Westerman wasn’t adequate, then the commissioners should have come up with another plan. Chief Westerman was thinking out of the box and came up with an idea that would have impacted 50 jobs. Citizens take for granted when they call 911 someone will respond. If we continue to lose qualified...
There are at least two sides to every story. Until recently we had never heard the other side of Julie MacDonald’s story, freeing her enemies to paint as unflattering a portrait of the former Interior Department official as possible. But getting a more complete and balanced story is important, since the case could continue to impact many Endangered Species Act decisions. MacDonald resigned as deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks in May, not long after an inspector general report seemed to confirm she m...

His interest in cooking is no joke. Wilmont is part of a program started last year at the high school that prepares students for careers in the restaurant and food service industry.
