The court stated in another order it will accept ...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 2, 2023

Trailing for the first time in three games this season, Portales High’s football team didn’t change a whole lot at halftime. No doubt, though, the Rams looked like a completely different team. They erased a 14-7 deficit by scoring on each of their six second-half possessions for a 48-14 win over West Las Vegas at Greyhound Stadium. Junior quarterback Paxton Culpepper threw for a personal-best six touchdowns, five coming in the final two stanzas. He had a five-TD night last season in a win over the Dons at Las Vegas. “It...

  • Opinion: Shrinking labor unions flex muscles

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 2, 2023

Most of our national holidays are a celebration of people and events that seem far removed. Labor Day is for us; the American worker. Our summers are bookended by three-day weekends. Memorial Day demands that we somberly remember those who died in war. Labor Day makes no demands. But we should be aware of its history. Along with celebrating workers, the holiday also recognizes the contributions made by labor unions in response to the robber barons of the 19th century who amassed obscene levels of wealth at the expense of...

  • Opinion: Water security is a serious issue, but Clovis' outlook is good

    Mike Morris, Guest columnist|Updated Sep 2, 2023

Maybe it’s my upbringing, but as a New Mexican, water security is an issue of great concern for me. It always has been. Since I began serving as mayor, that concern has increased exponentially. Not long after being elected in 2020, the former mayor made a statement to me, which I may never forget. He said, “A person cannot be mayor of Clovis long without becoming burdened with the water situation we face in eastern New Mexico.” I’ll save you the suspense and tell you he was right. The situation we face, of course, is that ou...

  • Opinion: Commitment to Cannon is long-term

    Martin Heinrich, Guest columnist|Updated Sep 2, 2023

As soon as President Biden stepped out of Air Force One during his visit to New Mexico last month, I handed him a letter advocating for additional investments and forward-looking missions at Cannon Air Force Base. During my time in Congress, I have secured over $660 million in military construction funding to modernize the facilities and infrastructure at Cannon. I have worked to deliver these investments because I know the enormous importance of Cannon to Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico, and our national security. I am...

Ismay is credited with coining the phrase that the purpose o...

  • Publisher's journal: Here's your chance to beat the Davids

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 2, 2023

Tell the truth, Reader. Have you ever wanted to beat me? Think back to those op-ed pieces I've written through the years, like the one that ended "Kill them. Kill them all," referencing prairie dogs. Or maybe that story I wrote about the tunnels under the city of Clovis that turned out to be an April Fools' joke. You did want to beat me, didn't you? Now turn your attention to longtime Mayor David Lansford, who's now a partner in the Zia Radio Group. Did you ever want to beat...

  • Opinion: Government no good for worst times

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Sep 2, 2023

When it’s important, when it’s life and death, when it matters most — that’s precisely when you don’t need government involved. This is when you don’t need politicians and bureaucrats dictating a one-size-fits-all standard, backed with the threat of violence. This is when government power is most dangerous to society. I’m not only talking about unusual or emergency situations. The same applies to ordinary everyday matters, which are important for your health, safety, and gener...

  • Don't miss a minute of your 70th

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Sep 2, 2023

If you are ever fortunate enough to find yourself in possession of an invitation to a 70th high school class reunion, I have one piece of advice: Say yes, and don't miss a minute of it. I speak from experience. On the last Friday in August, I got to be a fly on the wall as most of the remaining members of the Melrose High School class of 1953 met in a Clovis restaurant to celebrate the years they spent together as Buffalos more than seven decades ago. A dozen of the original...
