  • Faith: We don't always end up where we think we will

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 5, 2023

We don’t always end up where we think we’ll be when we start out on our journey. For some, the journey is straightforward. I think about the people in my life who knew what they wanted to do and be, and then set out to make it happen. For others, myself included, there were more twists and turns than the normal straightaway. It isn’t just that plans change, but that we change. Or our situations change. Or we discover what we thought we wanted, just didn’t work for us. Or it j...

  • Faith: I come to the garden, but not alone

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 5, 2023

I was sitting on the patio on a recent evening and enjoying some quiet time. It was almost cool, by which I mean it was mercifully less than 100. I’ve got some plants out there that seem to be doing well — considering the oppressive heat and drought. A couple of Mandevilla plants are blooming nicely. A pomegranate plant (believe it or not) is filling in well. Not sure yet what it will need to really bloom, but I need to do some research. I’ve got two or three hibiscus plant...

  • Commentary: Hype looks silly in Texas Tech opener

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Sep 5, 2023

Joey McGuire was right. His Texas Tech football team did put the country on notice last Saturday night, that is after a long rain delay if much of the country bothered to notice. And it is this – that after a face plant against Wyoming on CBS and the home opener this weekend against Oregon on FOX, these Red Raiders are not ready for prime time despite their national exposure. After a summer of strutting and flexing, and getting many buy-ins from media and fans that this c...

  • Hounds look for improvement in clash with Sul Ross State

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 5, 2023

Sul Ross State's season opener at Western New Mexico last week resembled some basketball contests – a game of runs. The Lobos scored 21 consecutive points to take a 21-7 lead late in the half, but WNMU finished on a 28-0 surge and posted a 42-28 victory. When Eastern New Mexico University's football team takes on Sul Ross in an 11 a.m. (MDT) start on Saturday at Alpine, Texas, the Greyhounds will be looking for improvement over their narrow 28-26 season-opening win against New...

  • Can a dog be baby's best friend?

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 5, 2023

It’s week 28, and the sleep just keeps getting more and more uncomfortable. No, I’m not complaining, just adjusting to all of this still. Every week is an adjustment since it’s always something new. Let’s see … this week, in addition to the hard time sleeping, I’ve started to get leg cramps or “charley horses” at night, as some might call them. Those are quite the shock to wake up to when you’re peacefully sleeping. It’s hard to believe we are about 12 weeks out from meeting our baby girl. One thing I have yet to talk ab...

  • Opinion: Elderly, addled need to step down

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 5, 2023

Seriously folks. Maybe we Republicans better stop banging on Old Joe Biden for the serious cognitive issues he obviously has. Unless we hold the players on our own team responsible for their cognitive issues, we have to stop harping on the obvious mental declines of President Biden, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Diane Feinstein, my home state’s ancient senator. I’m talking of course about the problem of what to do about Sen. Mitch McConnell’s shaky brain. The Repub...

  • Opinion: Song places blame where it belongs

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 5, 2023

After whipping themselves into a frenzy, conservatives have tried to do a rapid U-turn of their embrace of YouTube sensation Oliver Anthony and his hit song, “Rich Men North of Richmond.” The flip-flop comes after Anthony (real name Christopher Anthony Lunsford) derided Republican politicians, radio hosts, and conservative news outlets for brazenly adopting his song. “It was funny seeing that (Republican) presidential debate,” Anthony said. “I wrote that song about those peo...

  • Publisher's journal: Bill Richardson: Honorary resident of our community

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 5, 2023

In May 2005, a federal committee charged with reducing the nation’s military installations recommended that Cannon Air Force Base be closed. Local, state and federal lawmakers joined the community to rally behind the base in hopes of saving it. Area residents wrote hundreds of letters and thousands lined the streets of the city when the federal Base Closure and Realignment Committee came to town for a public hearing. If the local efforts had a vocal leader, his name was Bill Richardson. New Mexico’s governor never cla...

  • Former governor Bill Richardson had big dreams for state

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 5, 2023

No one ever accused Bill Richardson of not thinking big - and dreaming bigger. Of all those thoughts and dreams, New Mexico sports were a prime beneficiary. To the mind-bending prospect of a National Football League franchise someday making Albuquerque its home, Richardson said (in effect), why not? Let's at least look into it. To the far more realistic hope of Albuquerque hosting an annual college bowl game, Richardson said, let's make it happen. To the formation of a...
