Have you ever done something you thought you would never do? I am thinking about over the last 20 years of my life. I have done things I thought I would never do. Here is a partial list: • tried to water ski once again at my age when I have not water-skied in 40 years; • touched a live rattlesnake; • walked across and back the San Francisco bridge when I am afraid of heights, much less deep, deep water; • kayaked for the first time and then a strong wind came up on the lake an...
God’s grace is wonderful. But if we think grace is easy, we need to think some more. One of Jesus’ most famous stories was told in response to a religious lawyer’s question: “Teacher, who is my neighbor?” The question was blatantly self-serving. Luke prefaces the lawyer’s question: “But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked ...” The greatest temptation we all face is to try to “justify” ourselves rather than accepting by faith the justification that comes only through...
PORTALES — Last week’s contest against St. Mike’s was a good test for the Portales pass rush and pass defense. The Horsemen put it in the air 27 times, and yet, the Rams passed the test with flying colors in a 21-6 victory. That Portales pass rush and pass defense will once again be put to the test tonight, as the Rams (1-1) travel to West Las Vegas for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Dons (1-1) should put it in the air plenty, as they average 27.5 pass attempts per game. “Our D-line...
OGDEN, Utah — Eastern New Mexico isn't exactly a hotbed for wakesurfing, but don't tell that to Clovis native Makayla Drake. Makayla, 13, will be riding in the World Wake Surfing Championship in Ogden, Utah, today along with 88 other competitors in the women's amateur surf group, which is pretty much the open category since it's 13 to adult. She qualified by making top eight in her division at past competitions including Wake the Desert, Tommy's U.S. Wakesurfing Open in Michig... Full story
CLOVIS — Eight up, eight down. Clovis’ boys soccer team remained perfect at 8-0 Thursday night, taking care of New Mexico Military Academy 5-0 at Yucca Middle School. Bruno Armendariz and Carlos Valdivia combined on the shutout. And the Wildcats did it with a lot of the usual names. Except the return of Richard Masterson, who was just cleared to play two days ago after recovering from a sprained MCL then supplied a goal and an assist in Thursday’s game. Clovis was already good. Masterson potentially making them better is a...
CLOVIS — Records don’t always reveal everything. So nothing is guaranteed for Clovis High’s football team — 2-0 record and all — against 0-2 Rio Rancho tonight at Leon Williams Stadium. Still, the numbers do tend to leap out. The Wildcats have rolled up 81 total points in their two victories thus far at Hobbs and Aztec. The Rams, in Week 1 at Centennial and their Week 2 home opener against Pine Creek, allowed 74 total points. Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells has said that...
PORTALES — Portales and Clovis each had one mission in Thursday’s girls soccer matchup at Greyhound Stadium. For the young Lady Rams, it was a measuring stick for how close — or how far away — they are as contenders. As for the Lady Wildcats, it was about reinforcing the strong start to their 2018 campaign with yet another exceptional outing. Ultimately, the latter proved to be true in an 8-0 Wildcat victory. Clovis’ Danielle Griego was responsible for four of the eight goa...
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team came just a few minutes from a stunning upset and a program first Thursday night. But less than 10 minutes after they were defending a 1-0 lead, the Greyhounds were sent away with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 21 Colorado Mesa in the first of two road games in Colorado this weekend. The Greyhounds (2-1), who were seeking their first 3-0 start in the 15-year history of the program, came just a few minutes away from g...
CLOVIS — Cummins Natural Gas Engines is looking to have a bigger footprint in Clovis — 22,500 square feet larger, to be exact. Chase Gentry, executive director for the Clovis Industrial Development Corporation, said a new 22,500 square foot building would be built with local contractors. The CIDC owns the land used by Cummins, which...
