MIAMI — Hurricane Irma continued its deadly sweep through the Caribbean on Friday as residents of Florida waited with frazzled nerves and growing fears over just how bad the storm would be. The Category 4 hurricane, with a footprint as big as Texas, is expected to make landfall early Sunday and blow through central Florida with 150 mph winds, reaching Georgia by Monday morning. Mandatory evacuations were in place for most coastal communities, affecting 650,000 people or more....

LUBBOCK, Texas — Calling Friday’s Eastern New Mexico-Colorado Christian volleyball match surprising and unpredictable would be understating it. First, the Greyhounds seemed doomed, seven points away from getting swept in their second match of the Lubbock Christian Tournament. Then it appeared they had taken control and would go storming to a five-set victory. Then it seemed they might squander a fifth-set advantage and lose in heartbreaking fashion. Ultimately, though, Eastern held on in the fifth, winning 3-2, with set sco...

PORTALES — In a game mired in penalties, the Portales High football team managed to score 35 second-half points on its way to a 56-28 homecoming victory over West Las Vegas on Friday at Greyhound Stadium. The Rams held the Dons to just seven second-half points, along with just 76 total yards of offense and two interceptions. “Honestly, we still had a lot of penalties. I still don’t understand (that),” a frustrated Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “We played better on defense, we...

The Wildcats (2-1) had taken the lead in what was a seesaw battle at Rio Rancho Stadium when quarterback Brandt Davis sliced his way into the end zone with 5:33 to play.
