  • Opinion: Every vaccine skeptic's death is a tragedy

Dallas Morning News, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 15, 2021

You’ve likely seen the headlines about COVID-19 killing radio hosts and activists who opposed vaccines and masks. Several of those headlines were about Caleb Wallace, a Texan who helped organize a “freedom rally” this summer to protest mask-wearing. Some corners of the internet reacted with ridicule to news of his death last month, sparing no thought to Wallace’s grieving wife and daughters. It’s important that we all resist the impulse to scream, “I told you so!” Yes, it’s maddening to find ourselves swept up in yet another...

  • Faith: Honor God by letting him spin the world without us

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 14, 2021

“Be still, and know that I am God!” says our Father through the psalmist’s words in Psalm 46. And he continues, “I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world” (46:10). As usual, I love the way Eugene Peterson captures the feel of this in his Bible paraphrase The Message: “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.” If I’m never still, I’m never fully honoring God as God; I’m trying t...

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2021

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — It didn’t take the Portales High girls soccer team long to shake off a recent loss. After seeing a four-match winning streak snapped two days earlier in a 4-1 defeat at Las Vegas Robertson, the Lady Rams returned on Saturday and posted a 4-0 victory over West Las Vegas. Senior forward/midfielder Zoe Roy put PHS (5-3) in front with a goal early in the first half, and the Lady Rams finished it off with three tallies in a span of about 20 minutes during the middle of the second stanza. It was their second win...

  • Hounds recover from slow start

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Sep 14, 2021

PORTALES - After getting blistered by Central Washington in its season opener, Eastern New Mexico University's football team looked like it still had a hangover from that one early in Saturday's clash with Adams State. It took more than a quarter to get on track, but once the Greyhounds did they were off to the races. Freshman quarterback Nate Valencia threw four touchdown passes - three to senior wide-out Justin Manyweather - and the Hounds tallied six unanswered TDs en...

  • Old friends set to meet at Farwell

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Sep 14, 2021

FARWELL — Texico football coach Bob Gilbreath and his Farwell counterpart, Darren Kelley, are quite familiar with each other. From there, they spent several seasons together on the staff of Eric Roanhaus at CHS. Friday night, they meet again, this time on the football field in a 7 p.m. (CDT) kickoff. “We’re about as close to being brothers as anyone could be,” Gilbre...

  • Rams face Sartans in rematch from spring

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2021

PORTALES — At first glance, you probably wouldn’t expect a repeat of last spring’s Portales High-St. Pius game, a 6-0 Rams win, when the teams match up again at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Greyhound Stadium. So far this fall, both teams are scoring points and giving them up at a much higher clip. The Sartans (2-2) will bring an offense which has averaged nearly 34 points a game and a defense which is allowing just over 30. Meantime, PHS (0-3) has scored 74 points to date while giving up 106. Still, Rams coach Jamie Ramir...

  • Opinion: Historical record should show all sides

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 14, 2021

Perhaps you’ve noticed that old people like to remember the “good old days” even when they weren’t so good. It’s a nostalgic tendency to think that, as tough as things were, we got through them so it must have been good for us. You might remember the old Saturday Night Live skit of the old man exaggerating his old-days experiences with the conclusion, “That’s the way it was, and we liked it,” when, it reality, that’s not the way it was, and often we didn’t like it. History, on the other hand, shouldn’t be written that way. It...

  • Thinking back to '40 inches in '41'

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Sep 14, 2021

Even though Roosevelt County’s wettest recorded year happened 20 years before I was born, I rarely empty my rain gauge without thinking of 1941. I grew up on the stories — you may have as well. At our place it was known as “40 inches in ’41.” It was the year our grandparents and great-grandparents were kept busy planting, replanting, and emptying those rain gauges until the rains finally turned off late in the fall. The official precipitation for Portales for 1941 was 43.61...

  • Opinion: Make politicians invisible again

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Sep 14, 2021

You may have picked up subtle clues that my opinion of politicians is exactly as low as my opinion of freelance thieves, bullies, and vandals. It’s impossible for me to dislike them more than I already do. Still, I admit some politicians are undeniably worse than others. My measure of how good or bad a politician is depends entirely on whether they force me to notice them. The more I notice them, the worse I consider them to be. Any politician who isn’t completely inv...

We have always provided additional help via tutoring and a wide variety of intervention programs for those students needing it. During the past year and a half, that academic help has expanded even more than usual, given the challenges students experienced during the past year. One of our most successful programs was our CMS Summer Academy held this past summer. We had an amazing turnout, with over 600 students enrolling in this program. Ordinarily, the grades covered in a...

  • Clovis police warn of scam targeting businesses

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis Police Department is warning local businesses of a new scam, with four businesses reporting some level of attempt. According to a CPD release, scammers convince a business’ employee that they are from the corporate office, or in one case the Fire Marshal’s Office. The scammer then convinced employees to remove money from the cash register and send it in the form of a money order or place the funding in a bitcoin machine for electronic delivery. The department advises employees to contact their corpo...

  • Clovis zip code drops to third in state for infections

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis 88101 ZIP code wasn’t the leader among the state for new COVID-19 infections over the weekend. But it was close. The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed 1,786 new cases of COVID-19 between Saturday and Monday, including 78 in Curry County and 15 in Roosevelt County. Of the Curry County cases, 68 came from the 88101 ZIP code. That was third in the state, behind the 70 from both Albuquerque (87121) and Hobbs (88240). Four of the top six ZIP codes for new cases came from the Southeast region that inc...

  • Commission districts likely to see changes

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Sep 14, 2021

CLOVIS — Four, if not all five, of Curry County's commission districts will see some level of upheaval by the end of the year, as the Census-driven process of redistricting is starting to take shape. Commissioners heard a first presentation on the matter during Tuesday's commission meeting, where John Sharp of Research and Polling said the plan is to have three different redistricting plans for commissioners to approve by Dec. 31. Sharp said the ideal population for each district is 9,686, representing one-fifth of the t...

  • Portales schools join lawsuit

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Sep 14, 2021

PORTALES — With a small crowd cheering them on, and a few concerns levied, Portales school board members on Monday decided to join a lawsuit against the Public Education Department. By a 5-0 vote, board members agreed to join in the suit the Gallup-McKinley School District filed last October that challenges the authority of the PED. In a separate vote, it capped its financial contribution for the lawsuit to $1,000. The complaint argues, in part, for local control of measures related to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. M...
