  • Clovis football team routs Rockets

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 17, 2017

CLOVIS — Like flies at a picnic, those pesky Clovis turnovers just won't go away. But the Wildcats' football team feasted on Goddard anyway Friday night at Leon Williams Stadium. Unlike a week earlier at Rio Rancho, Clovis was able to dominate enough against the Rockets that turnovers didn't really matter, as the 'Cats cruised 41-0 — the program's largest margin of victory against Goddard since 1982. With that rout, Clovis improved to 3-1. Turnovers aside, just getting back in...

New year, new site, new just about everything as the Rams get set for the trip to Santa Fe for a 1:30 p.m. Saturday kickoff. "Honestly, we just had a good performance both times against them — with two different quarterbacks," Portales coach Jaime Ramirez said. "The game was truly much closer than...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 16, 2017

MELROSE — Tristan and Sterling Sena were together long before they were Melrose Buffalo teammates. "It just goes back to before we even started playing football, back in like the first grade just in the backyard throwing to each other," Sterling Sena said. "It's just a connection, we have chemistry." The only difference is they're bigger now, just as Melrose was bigger than Tatum in a 54-0 win Friday night. The Sena brothers combined to account for four touchdowns, i...

PORTALES — Night and day. That’s what Eastern New Mexico volleyball coach Sia Poyer had to say about his squad in its home-opening win over Texas A & M-Kingsville, following a rough outing at Western New Mexico this past Tuesday. The Greyhounds evened their early Lone Star Conference record by beating the Javelinas in four sets on Friday night, 25-13, 20-25, 25-21 and 26-24. “The loss against Western New Mexico, even though it was at their place, our effort was just embarrassing,” Poyer said. “I’m happy about the win. This i...

  • Spacecraft Cassini dies in Saturn's sky

    The Los Angeles Times|Updated Sep 16, 2017

Cassini, the NASA spacecraft whose breakthrough discoveries about Saturn and its many moons revolutionized the search for life beyond Earth, disintegrated Friday morning in the skies above the ringed planet. It was one month shy of its 20th anniversary in space. The explorer’s death was swift and deliberate. Traveling at 76,000 mph, it hurtled into the planet’s atmosphere shortly after 3:30 a.m. Pacific time and stopped communicating with Earth one minute later, according to NASA’s carefully choreographed plan. Within three...
