  • Hounds wrap: ENMU wins first OT game in its Division II history

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — It took overtime to do it, but the Eastern New Mexico football team improved to 2-0 last Saturday. By surviving a frantic second half and getting a quick overtime score, the Greyhounds escaped Colorado Mesa with a 44-37 win, their first OT victory as an NCAA Division II program. ENMU scored its overtime touchdown in just five plays, the capper supplied by quarterback Wyatt Strand’s six-yard overtime run, followed by Tyler Vargas’ extra point. The Hounds’ defense then kept Mesa out of the end zone to...

  • Familiar foes to meet Friday

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 17, 2019

It’s Week 5 for much of the local high school football teams, Week 4 for Farwell and Melrose, just Week 2 for Dora. Whatever weekend it is for whatever team, it’s a full slate. Here’s a look: Melrose (3-0) at Mountainair (2-1), 6 p.m. Friday The Buffaloes are a long way from their goal of winning a fifth state title in six years. But Friday could be another step up ... well, the ‘Mountain.’ The undefeated Buffs visit a team that’s only once-beaten. Mountainair’s lone loss, though, was a big one — 44-12 at home against a...

  • College Daze Rodeo slated for weekend

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

PORTALES — Each night at the College Daze Rodeo, a former championship team from Eastern New Mexico will be honored during the nightly rodeo. And, with any luck, spectators will see a few Greyhounds trying to create their own national title opportunities. This weekend’s College Daze Rodeo, the 54th in school history, runs Thursday through Saturday, with each session starting at 7 p.m. at ENMU’s Lewis Cooper Arena. Albert Flinn, in his 12th season as rodeo coach at ENMU, said 17 teams from the Southwest Region will compe...

  • Clovis boys soccer team on roll

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

ARTESIA — Clovis’ boys soccer team is rolling. Saturday, the Wildcats went on the road to Artesia and came away with a 2-0 victory. It was their seventh straight game without a loss; they are 6-0-1 since Aug. 30. During that stretch, the ’Cats have outscored their opponents 18-4. Despite the dominance those numbers indicate, Saturday’s victory came in especially dramatic fashion, as Diego Perez scored both Clovis goals within the last five minutes of the game. Wildcat goalie Bruno Armendariz recorded the shutout. Clovis...

  • Next stop: Lions' den

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 17, 2019

PORTALES — After beating Missouri S&T 35-28 in the final five minutes and Colorado Mesa 44-37 in overtime, Eastern New Mexico’s football team would probably like a little less drama when visiting Texas A&M Commerce in Week 3. That, however, would likely be wishful thinking when the Greyhounds play their Lone Star Conference opener Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Commerce, Texas (6 p.m. Central Daylight Time, 5 p.m. MDT). A&M-Commerce has won the NCAA Division II championship as recently as 2017. The Lions made it to last year...

  • Greyhounds unranked but climbing poll

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

WACO, Texas — Eastern New Mexico’s football team isn’t a top 25 team in Division II, but they are climbing the rankings. The Greyhounds received five points in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, coming off their 44-37 win at Colorado Mesa. A total of five Lone Star Conference schools are in the poll. Ranked teams are Tarleton State at No. 4, Texas A&M-Commerce at No. 12 and Midwestern State at No. 16. West Texas A&M is in the “Others Receiving Votes” category with the Greyhounds with 31 poi...

  • ENMU soccer roundup: Teams find selves in polling

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Eastern New Mexico took another overtime win, and took advantage of an own goal, for the second consecutive game Sunday. But this time, a Greyhound player was credited with the game-winner. Joe Conway put home the game-winner off a Charlie Hackshall corner kick and a Joaquin Borruel header assist 5:46 into the extra frame, and the 2-1 neutral-site victory over Westminster extended the team’s school-record start to 4-0. The Greyhounds had on Friday defeated host Dixie State 1-0 on an overtime own goal. This...

  • Clovis faces tough Texas test

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 17, 2019

CLOVIS - As Monday's football practice was wrapping up at Clovis High School, the dust from last Friday's 60-27 win over Lubbock Monterey was still settling. Wildcats junior quarterback Chance Harris was coming off a weekend in which he threw more touchdown passes than Tua. Clovis' defense was coming off a weekend in which it contained a loaded and lethal Monterey attack. And yet, the Wildcats were no longer basking in the glow of trouncing a Lubbock team, one that had beaten...

  • Rams seek fourth win

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2019

PORTALES — Losing a game by three touchdowns is never fun, even if it’s understandable. The Portales Rams experienced just that, falling to Class 5A power Goddard 44-12 on Friday night. The polls indicate the loss was understandable, as the Rams (3-1) retained their first-place ranking in the New Mexico Overtime Sports Class 4A poll on Tuesday. “I think that we were a little shell-shocked,” Portales coach Jaime Ramirez said of the loss. “We didn’t ever win the battle on the line of scrimmage. That is key, and they were physic...

The women’s team is off to a program-best 3-0 start. Awards went to Desiree Morgas (offensive), Hayden Zuniga (defensive) and Whitney Dockweiler (goalkeeper).
