  • Faith: 'In the year that Queen Elizabeth II died ...'

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 20, 2022

Tomorrow, as I’m writing, the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey. (My invitation seems to have been lost in the mail.) Seventy years and 214 days. According to Wikipedia, her reign is “the longest of any British monarch, the longest recorded of any female head of state in history, and the second-longest verified reign of any monarch in history.” In Isaiah 6, when the prophet Isaiah wants to tell his readers when his amazing vision and his divin...

  • Pages past, Sept. 21: Gambling charges against Elks dropped

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 20, 2022

On this date … 1972: Prosecutors had decided they will not pursue felony charges against 10 people arrested Sept. 7 for illegal gambling at the Clovis Elks Lodge. “Since the city attorney does not wish to prosecute it as a misdemeanor we will not pursue further,” District Attorney Fred Hensley told the Clovis News-Journal. Police had raided the city service club and charged 10 people with misdemeanor gambling. But when the city decided not to prosecute, Hensley said his only options were to drop charges or prosecute under...

The program is seen as the beginning of an “early warning system” for the state for viruses such as COVID and monkeypox. Dr. David Scrase, acting secretary of the NMDOH, discussed wastewater monitoring in a monthly livestreamed press update Thursday. “The state department of health reached out to the city,” Howalt said of the monitorin...

  • Commentary: Reality exposes where Tech is and how far away

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Sep 20, 2022

Turns out the 2022 Texas Tech football season is not a made-for-TV Disney movie after all. You know the plot – new coach is hired and excites the fan base as he instantly rescues a program mired in 12 years of mediocrity, and he does so with a raw backup quarterback after an injury to the starter, a poor offensive line and befriends the son of a single mom in his spare time. Reality is quite different. The world where credits do not roll at the end is much more calculating a...

  • Goddard slips past Cats in OT

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 20, 2022

CLOVIS - Clovis High boys soccer team was a gnat's eyelash away from avenging an earlier four-goal loss to Roswell Goddard on Monday night at Leon Williams Stadium. Instead, junior Drex Carter's cross-goal shot in sudden-death overtime clanged off the left post, and the Rockets were able to pull out a 4-3 win when junior forward/midfielder Kenneth Velarde scored from in front about midway through the second extra session. Goddard (12-2) handed the Cats a 5-1 setback in a...

  • Rams stay perfect at 5-0, host Elks for Homecoming

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 20, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE — So far, so good for Portales High’s football team this fall. On Saturday, the Rams forced five turnovers and cruised to a 32-0 victory over St. Pius to improve to 5-0 for the season. Despite the relatively lopsided result, PHS coach Jaime Ramirez said the Sartans (1-4) weren’t a bad team. “They were good, but our defense played great all day long,” he said. “Our offense played a good first half, (but) In the third quarter we had some penalties that were drive-killers.” Sophomore free safety Tommy Lopez and jun...

  • Opinion: Our differences make us stronger

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 20, 2022

The other day, I heard a pundit call New Mexico “purple,” as in a balanced mix of “blue” Democrats and “red” Republicans. If that’s the case, we must have some closeted Republicans holding office, because these days the Democrats control the political landscape. Republicans, however, aren’t that far removed from power. Not only do they control some conservative areas around New Mexico, it was only four years ago when a Republican was governor, so maybe a little purple is part of the equation after all. The fact is, New Me...

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s football team knew it was up against it on Saturday night against former Lone Star Conference compatriot Tarleton State, now in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. This week, the Greyhounds expect another stiff test when they resume LSC action on Saturday at unbeaten (3-0) Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tarleton held ENMU to two field goals and just over 100 yards of total offense en route to a 41-6 victory, although second-year Hounds coach Tye Hiatt was happy with t...

  • Opinion: Justice right to defend Supreme Court legitimacy

    Las Vegas Review-Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 20, 2022

The best way for the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve its legitimacy is to ignore public opinion. This month, Chief Justice John Roberts made remarks defending the institution of the Supreme Court. It was his first public address since the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. “Simply because people disagree with an opinion is not a basis for criticizing the legitimacy of the court,” he said at an event in Colorado. He added, “You don’t want the political branches telling you what the law is. And you don’t want publ...

  • Opinion: Politicians aren't better than you

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Sep 20, 2022

It seems it should be obvious to everyone by now: those who seek positions of political power can’t even run their own lives; they certainly shouldn’t be allowed to run yours. No one is less qualified to do so. Just look at the news. Locally, nationally, and internationally -- those with political power are drawn to criminal behavior like Junebugs to porch lights. They are not better than you. They are not smarter or wiser, more moral, or more expert. They aren’t entit...

  • Ukrainian exchange student planning to stick around

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Sep 20, 2022

When Nadiya Borys arrived in Portales from Ukraine at the beginning of this year on the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, she fully expected to complete a semester as a junior at Portales High School, then fly back home in June. But, as she says rather simply, "Stuff happened." If you watch the news even on occasion, you know what that "stuff" was. After all, as Nadiya said, the only two things most Americans know about Ukraine is "Chernobyl ... and the war." Because of...

  • Clovis to receive money for city-crossing trail

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 20, 2022

It’s a project that’s been proposed for a few years and it looks like it will finally happen: A trail running through Clovis from the city’s eastern edge to the western edge. City Manager Justin Howalt said the final link to the trail will cost about $300,000 and will be called The Liebelt Channel Trail, named for the natural drainage channel that runs from the city’s northwest to Greene Acres Lake. The $300,000 is from the state Department of Transportation. Howalt said the trail will follow the channel as it comes out of...
