FLOYD — After a return to the gridiron, eight years later, some weren’t sure what to expect out of Elida’s reformed football team. However, as it turns out, the Tigers are making up for lost time thus far. On Saturday afternoon, Elida went in to Floyd and took down the Broncos, 47-8, to improve to 4-1 on the season. “It’s a great feeling,” Tigers coach Jarred Hestand said. “These boys are doing good and they play good for me. We have good rapport. If everybody can stay heal...
CARLSBAD — Saturday’s Ron Singleton/Elks Invitational brought plenty of good news for local cross country teams. • The Clovis boys varsity team rolled on, winning yet another meet. • Clovis’ Jon Fuentes rolled on, too, claiming yet another individual title. • Portales’ Brandon Guerro won the boys junior varsity race. • Clovis’ varsity girls placed third, almost like a victory for a young and improving group. Lots of fun stuff to be excited about on the long ride home from Ca...
CLOVIS — Despite a brief scare when one of the stained glass panels split in half, a piece of art that has hung in the Clovis Community College commons area since the 1980s was removed on Saturday with relatively few hiccups. The eight stained glass panels making up the piece called "The Pair" were removed from their longtime home hanging from the second floor ceiling outside the school's bookstore due to safety concerns. Carpenter Larry Jones, one of several CCC employees who...

Scoring for the Cubs on offense were Kash Roberts, who scored on two 70-yard touchdown runs and kicked four PATs, Jett Stone on touchdown runs of 30 and 50 yards. On defense, Will Jordan notched two points for the Cubs when he tackled the Yucca QB in the end zone for a safety. The Gattis special teams also blocked a punt in the game. The Cubs moved to 3-0, and will face Marshall 6 p.m. Tuesday at...

I set out in late July collecting information to write about the 50th anniversary of Elbert Muncy's death. It never occurred to me how hard it would be to find a photograph of the beloved Portales pharmacist who was killed on Aug. 18, 1968, at the old B and J Drug on the courthouse square. Images of his wife, Marge — also a well-known Portales figure who spent years teaching first graders at L.L. Brown Elementary and guiding a Sunday School class at First Presbyterian C... Full story
I don’t know about you, but admitting that you own an umbrella in the desert Southwest is enough embarrassment without being caught foisting one above your noggin in public. I caught myself chuckling out loud as I scurried into the store for a few groceries after work with my bright yellow umbrella held above my shiny pate. I should be celebrating this rain by singing in it. I probably ought to be dancing off the light poles like Gene Kelly. I doubt if the taps on my shoes wil...
How much does Jeff Pearlman want to sell his new book? He’ll talk to me. I preordered his “Football for a Buck,” a tale of the defunct United States Football League, months ago. I’d never followed the USFL nor purchased any of Pearlman’s previous seven books, but was optimistic it would be to the USFL what Terry Pluto’s “Loose Balls” was for the American Basketball Association. Condensed review: Fantastic read so far, and I laugh out loud about every five minutes. A coworker who noticed my book mentioned Pearlman seemingly ag...
CLOVIS — As a cadre of racing commissioners prepares to visit Clovis early next month for public hearings on three racino proposals, local groups in support of and opposition to the idea are making preparations of their own. “It’s an opportunity for the people of the community to voice their opinion one way or another, so the commission can hear the support or lack of support of the project,” New Mexico Racing Commission Executive Director Izzy Trejo told The News last week. The five NMRC commissioners will be in Clovis... Full story
PORTALES — Greyhound soccer coach Jon Fridal would have preferred a second half like Saturday a little earlier in the week. Newman coach Cliff Brown would have preferred never seeing it at all. A week after Eastern’s women followed a scoreless first half with a four-goal second, the Greyhound men followed suit with all of their tallies after halftime in a 4-2 win over Newman for their second Heartland Conference win of the season. Lucas Vaz and Gregory Franusic each had a goa...

ROSWELL — For the third time this year, Portales’ boys soccer team was close, but no cigar against NMMI. The Rams rallied in the second half from a two-goal deficit, but in the end the Colts scored a late goal to defeat Portales for a third time, 4-3. “We have played NMMI three times this season, and each time, we’ve gotten closer,” Rams coach Juan Mendez explained. “The NMMI coach (John Barbour) told me, ‘No more, you guys keep getting closer and closer.’” The Colts (5-5) had...
ALBUQUERQUE — 12 up, 12 down. The Clovis boys soccer team improved to 12-0 on Saturday, completing a weekend sweep at Albuquerque’s APS Complex. And though win No. 12 came by way of a 7-1 score over Cibola on Saturday, No. 11 on Friday night was a lot tougher to earn, as the Wildcats survived 2-1 against Valley. “Being undefeated you’ve got a target on your back,” Clovis head coach Greg Trujillo said, “but we had something to prove because last Saturday against Artesia we...
