HOLLYWOOD--God bless America, and how’s everybody? • President Bush gave a televised address to the nation Wednesday about the Wall Street bailout. He said taxpayers must put up $700 billion dollars to save the financial system. At least when O.J. Simpson holds you up he signs a few autographs. • Roger Clemens was excluded from Yankee Stadium’s final event Sunday due to his dubious steroid testimony in Washington D.C. He’s under FBI investigation for lying to Congress. If we put people in jail for that, we wouldn’t...

  • God in charge of our destiny

    Judy Brandon

We always get a variety of catalogs in the mail. Last week was no different so I stacked them and then went through the bundle on Saturday. The catalogs were the ones we receive periodically — clothing, hunting, items for the holidays. But one stood out. It was a catalog featuring children’s furniture. As I looked through the pages, I was amazed at all the options parents have these days for decorating kids’ rooms. There were study rooms, play rooms and boys and gir... Full story

  • Contentment can be found in God

No one ever gets it exactly right, but the right kind of contentment is a precious thing. The quickest way to discombobulate contentment is to analyze it to death, but maybe it can bear a little discussion. Contentment and happiness are almost twin sisters—conjoined twins, I’d say, sharing vital organs. Their relationship fascinates me, and my rather ample ears perk up when I hear others musing over such things. C.S. Lewis once commented that his mother’s people “had the talent for happiness in a high degree &mdas...

  • Feed for the soul

How many times have you heard someone sigh and say, “I took piano lessons when I was a kid. I hated them. Now, I wish I knew how to play.” Dutiful parents sign their kids up for band or orchestra at school, rent instruments and take seriously their jobs as “reminders.” You know the drill – “remind” the student it’s time to practice, “remind” the student to study that new song. The whole deal becomes just another class. The student – rightfully – wonders how a love of music got turned into joyless drudgery. A...

  • Deployment policy revised

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — Effective Wednesday, Air Force officials here will implement policy changes to improve sourcing efficiency of 365-day deployments and ensure airmen receive adequate notification before deployment. The new policy sets the deployment “accept or decline” option at three calendar days, streamlines the verification process and incorporates the air and space expeditionary force reclama process (request to cancel the selected airman) for 365-day taskings. It also requires a medical pre-assessme...

  • Compete, but have balance

I am a competitive person. Not too strange if you consider that my dad’s tender words in most situations that involved me and others were, “You must destroy your adversaries at all cost — I want to see destruction in your eyes.” And so I tried. I tried my best to beat the competition in my dance classes, in school, when I worked on Wall Street — though I failed miserably as an analyst and in many things that I did. And it really didn’t work. It didn’t work because it made me feel like I was either on top of th... Full story
