  • Compete, but have balance

I am a competitive person. Not too strange if you consider that my dad’s tender words in most situations that involved me and others were, “You must destroy your adversaries at all cost — I want to see destruction in your eyes.” And so I tried. I tried my best to beat the competition in my dance classes, in school, when I worked on Wall Street — though I failed miserably as an analyst and in many things that I did. And it really didn’t work. It didn’t work because it made me feel like I was either on top of th...

  • Deployment policy revised

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — Effective Wednesday, Air Force officials here will implement policy changes to improve sourcing efficiency of 365-day deployments and ensure airmen receive adequate notification before deployment. The new policy sets the deployment “accept or decline” option at three calendar days, streamlines the verification process and incorporates the air and space expeditionary force reclama process (request to cancel the selected airman) for 365-day taskings. It also requires a medical pre-assessme...

  • Risk-taking OK, but don’t expect taxpayer help

Freedom New Mexico The city of Galveston, Texas, has asked Congress for $2.2 billion to repair hurricane damage to the island city’s port, rebuild infrastructure and housing, restore beaches and give grants to small businesses. It has become traditional, of course, for Congress to appear generous in such instances by appropriating large sums of other peoples’ money in the wake of natural disasters. But it’s still worth asking whether it is justifiable or wise. Anybody who has spent much time watching the History Chann...

  • Managing fuel prices not feds’ job

    Tibor Machan

In genuinely free markets, prices reflect the overall intersection between supply and demand. No prices are too high or too low. Such notions express personal expectations and nothing objectively true. An exorbitant price is one someone finds beyond his budget, a good deal something well within it. In particular, if airfares were truly exorbitantly high, planes would fly with few passengers, just as few people drive Bentleys or Maseratis, both of which cost a bundle. Planes are mostly filled to the brim. As someone who flies...

  • Music brings families together

How many times have you heard someone sigh and say, “I took piano lessons when I was a kid. I hated them. Now, I wish I knew how to play.” Dutiful parents sign their kids up for band or orchestra at school, rent instruments and take seriously their jobs as “reminders.” You know the drill — “remind” the student it’s time to practice, “remind” the student to study that new song. The whole deal becomes just another class. The student — rightfully — wonders how a love of music got turned into joyless drudgery. A...

  • Farmers Market: Freshest produce in town

    PNT Staff

This year’s Portales Farmers Market is going well, farmers say, in spite of a few challenges. Market manager Margie Plummer, who grows near Portales, said the season is going well. “We have lots of vendors and lots of customers,” she said. Crops have done well for the farmers who sell at the market, though tomatoes were slow. Vegetables ripening now, late in the season, are doing better than in some years, she said. Smoky Ball, whose farm is on East 18th St., said his crops are producing well — except for tomat...
