  • Good to have someone pointing out God in our ordinary lives

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Sep 24, 2019

All honorable work is God’s work, a calling, and anyone serious about doing a good job in his/her work derives priceless benefit from the example of respected mentors. Surely teachers and doctors, business folks and farmers, all need mentors to encourage them to “soldier on.” One of my most influential mentors passed away almost a year ago, and I never met him. Eugene Peterson, best-known for his amazing paraphrase of the Bible, “The Message,” never wrote anything poorly, b...

  • Looking for Lopes, and his WWII story

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Sep 24, 2019

The man's name was apparently Lopes. He seemed to have World War II ties to Company L, Second Division, Saipan, Tarawa, and Clovis, N.M. At least that's what was carved on the sheath of his knife, along with the words "My kiss is death." Joe Wolf, a Texas Hill Country collector of military memorabilia, said the U.S. Marine Corps knife has a blade that is sharpened on one edge only. "It's not a fighting knife," Wolf said. "It's certainly not a bayonet. It's for hacking the...

  • Hoping house will sell to someone who loves it

    Carrie Classon|Updated Sep 24, 2019

The message said: “The septic guy can’t find the cover. Call him.” I’ve been getting a lot of messages like this since I decided to put my century-old farmhouse up for sale. I haven’t lived in the farmhouse for years now — not since I moved out to go to graduate school and become a writer, met Peter, married Peter, and moved on with my life. The farmhouse was where I lived for many years with my first husband and then, for a while, after our divorce. The farmhouse is where I thought I’d grow old. I planted a lot of trees....

  • ENMU's first homecoming a memorable event

    Betty Williamson|Updated Sep 24, 2019

As Eastern New Mexico University celebrates its homecoming this weekend, it seems fitting to look back to the first one that was held 85 years ago — on Oct. 6, 1934. That first gathering didn’t include alumni. There weren’t any yet. Eastern New Mexico Junior College had only opened for business a few months earlier. The 17 students in the first graduating class wouldn’t receive diplomas until the following spring. But the day-long event on the first Saturday of long-ag...

  • Roosevelt commissioners update property tax rates

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Sep 24, 2019

PORTALES — Roosevelt County Commissioners in a brief special meeting on Monday fulfilled an annual requirement to update property tax rates imposed by the state’s Department of Finance and Administration. County Assessor George Beggs presented on the agenda item and said his office’s responsibility is to ensure there are no math mistakes in the finance department’s tax rates. Beggs told The News that rates are “about the same” and that “minor fluctuations from last year rates are normal.” House Bill 407, “which allowed...

  • Water authority to consider easement agreement

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Sep 24, 2019

CLOVIS — An easement agreement comes Thursday before the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority, one of several still outstanding as progress advances toward the Finished Water 3 component of the interim groundwater project. ENMWUA Administrator Orlando Ortega said the offer and easement agreement with Carl D. Moore was “one of a handful that are on our list.” Ortega told The News on Tuesday that he didn’t have the specifics of that agreement immediately available, but noted “we’ve acquired half of the easements...

  • Committee, company work on setting golf course rules

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 24, 2019

CLOVIS — Golf is a difficult game. Golf course regulations aren’t much easier sometimes. The city’s parks, recreation and beautification committee worked with Touchstone Golf on Monday evening to hammer out basic course rules, and how to notify people, whether they play golf or walk around the course. Keaton Aucutt, general manager for the Colonial Park Golf Course — operated by Touchstone as of May 1 — presented a list of 16 rules he acknowledged were often common sense, but have to be written somewhere on the basic notion o...
