PORTALES -- Eastern New Mexico ran all night, save for a lengthy weather delay, and claimed their first Lone Star Conference victory of the season. Senior quarterback Wyatt Strand had 195 yards rushing and two touchdowns, part of a 515-yard rushing effort as Eastern New Mexico outlasted Texas A&M-Kingsville 48-34 to improve to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in LSC play. In total, the Greyhounds had two 100-yard rushers, with Paul Terry going for 179 yards on 26 carries. Johnny...
SANTA FE— When the Clovis High boys cross country team gets healthy — with the date on that getting repeatedly pushed back — it’s going to be a force in any meet it attends. Of course, the Wildcat present isn’t all that bad either, as evidenced by a comfortable win Saturday in the Capital City Invite. Jerrick Maldonado and T.J. Gregg finished 1-2 for the first time this season, as Clovis took the team trophy with just 50 points to 76 for Pojoaque and 93 for Taos. The Wildcats had four of the top 12 finishers, and their oth...
WOODROW - The stark reality for first-year Lubbock-Cooper coach Chip Darden is that the Pirates have a long way to go to be the team they are capable of being. Five turnovers have a way of showing that. But reality also tells Darden his team is not that far off from reaching its potential, and it's a lot easier to clean those things up when you've won four of your first five games and have a bye week to get ready for the District 3-5A Division II slate. The No. 7-ranked...
CLOVIS - Tuesday's Portales/Clovis boys soccer tilt at Leon Williams Stadium was won by the Wildcats 3-1. Still, Rams first-year head coach Michael Aunan couldn't help seeing positives, and Clovis head coach Greg Trujillo couldn't help seeing ways in which his team needs to improve. Trujillo was troubled by the fact that his Wildcats let Portales stick around, make it a 2-1 game well into the second half. Aunan was encouraged that his Rams did that sticking around. "We keep...
CLOVIS - For most kids, the highlight of summer is frolicking in the pool, enjoying the rides and treats at the local fair, maybe a vacation or camping trip. For Cannon Oaks, this past summer's highlight was at least as much fun. And probably a little more unique. Though a member of Clovis Gymnastics Academy for less than a year, Cannon traveled with teammates to West Palm Beach during the summer and competed in the Stars and Stripes National competition. Worth the trip, safe...
MELROSE - It was the Melrose High School gym in September, not Rio Rancho's Santa Ana Star Center in November. Yet, Friday afternoon's Logan-Melrose volleyball match had a state-championship feel to it. For good reason. The Lady Buffaloes came into last year's Class A state title match looking to defend the crown they had won a year earlier, only to have a repeat snatched away by the Lady Longhorns. Melrose is vying for another state championship this year and had taken severa...
September football wrapped up this weekend. Here's a look at how the local slate played out: Farwell 32, Dimmitt 28 FARWELL - Another Friday, another comeback win for the Steers. A week after rallying from two scores down to beat Texico 29-28, Farwell came back from a two-score deficit at home against Dimmitt this past Friday, and as a result moved above .500 for the first time this season, improving to 3-2. The Steers have become a winning team by proving that deficits don't...
HOBBS — Both Eastern New Mexico cross country teams recorded top five finishes on Friday night at the New Mexico Junior College Cross Country Invitational at Harry McAdams Park, with the women claiming third and the men fifth. The women's team scored 84 points, while the men's side had 135. Junior Aminata Kenyawani led the women's side with a sixth-place finish following a time of 19:56.04 in the 5K race while freshman Jon Fuentes shined once again for the men's side with an 8K time of 26:16.24, good enough for ninth place i...
PORTALES — Hours before the university’s homecoming king and queen were crowned, another winner of the vote was announced to the Eastern New Mexico University’s Board of Regents. By an 87.5% vote, students who participated in the homecoming elections earlier in the week also favored adding a women’s golf team, as the college has explored over the last few months. There are obvious asterisks attached to the vote. The 552 votes on the question, tacked onto the homecoming vote, represents less than 10% of the student body, a...
CANYON — Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Hannah Kelley-Lusk had a goal and an assist, and West Texas A&M knocked Eastern New Mexico from the ranks of the undefeated with a 2-1 victory Friday in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. In a rematch of last season’s LSC championship semifinals, the Buffs (2-3-0, 1-0-0) struck early, as Kelley-Lusk scored off a Jessica Diaz assist in the first half. The goal was the first netted against ENMU junior Whitney Dockweiler this season, breaking her shutout streak at 389...
The Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team entered Thursday hoping to make No. 4 West Texas A&M its third ranked team to upset this season, and everything looked good with a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the road match. That lasted about five minutes, as the Buffs put together a quick pair of goals and went on to top the No. 9 Greyhounds 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. The Greyhounds bounced back Saturday, pulling away in the second half for a 5-2 win over Texas Permian Basin to improve to 7-1 (1-1 LSC). T...
AUSTIN, Texas — Eastern New Mexico’s volleyball team, coming off a pair of home losses to open the Lone Star Conference season, headed to Texas for a pair of LSC crossover matches over the weekend. Unfortunately, their struggles followed them, as both St. Mary’s and St. Edward’s took home sweeps over the Greyhounds Friday and Saturday, respectively. The defeats put the Greyhound losing streak at five matches, which the team will try to curb Thursday with a road match against division foe West Texas A&M. That will be followe...
MELROSE - During the second quarter of Friday night's Logan-Melrose football game, the lights on the Buffaloes' side of the field went out. Before the end of the third quarter, Melrose had put Logan's lights out, ending the game on the mercy rule by building a 50-0 lead in the district opener for both teams, home opener for the Buffaloes. So, that score became the final and Melrose became 5-0, 1-0 district, as its quest to win a fifth state title in six years continued. Still...

The following books are available for checkout: Clovis-Carver Public Library “The Girl Behind the Red Rope” by Ted and Rachelle Dekker: Ten years ago, Grace saw something that would forever change the course of history. When evil in its purest form is unleashed on the world, she and others from their religious community are already hidden deep in the hills of Tennessee, abiding by every rule that will keep them safe, pure--and alive. As long as they stay there, behind the red perimeter. “The Jane Austen Diet: Austen's Secre...
