  • Faith: Try to accept the best God offers us

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 28, 2021

“Man finds it hard to get what he wants, because he does not want the best; God finds it hard to give, because He would give the best, and man will not take it.” So writes the wise old Scottish preacher and author George MacDonald. It’s true, isn’t it? Our Father tells us that happiness lies in learning to be content with what we have, whether we have a little or a lot. He tells us to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33), and “all these things” — thi...

  • Hounds come up short in OT

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2021

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - In no way did it look like Eastern New Mexico University's football team would make a game of it after the first quarter of Saturday's Lone Star Conference clash against 15th-ranked Midwestern State. The Mustangs, playing their home opener, put together three early scoring drives and led 17-0 before period's end. Then, the tide slowing turned and the Greyhounds jumped in front with three touchdown passes from freshman quarterback Nate Valencia to senior...

  • Rams turn back Timberwolves

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2021

PORTALES — Wins have been hard to come by for the Portales High boys soccer team this season, so Saturday’s 3-2 triumph over East Mountain at the PHS pitch was a reason to celebrate. Freshman midfielder Luis Ruelas gave the Rams a seemingly comfortable 3-1 lead with a goal in the 70th minute, only to see the Timberwolves counter just over a minute later. Portales, though, was able to hang on. “We played better as a team (than in recent matches),” Rams coach Ruben Tellez said. “We kind of controlled the middle better an...

  • No. 12 Angelo posts 1-0 win over ENMU

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2021

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team hung in there for more than a half on Saturday against 12th-ranked Angelo State, but the Rambelles got a penalty-kick goal from junior midfielder Valerie Solis early in the second stanza and made it stand up for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference victory. ASU (6-1, 1-1 LSC) rebounded from a conference-opening loss and dominated play for the most part, but the Greyhounds (2-5, 0-2) made the Rambelles — coached by former ENMU coach Travis McCorkle — work hard fo...

  • Cats welcome Albuquerque High

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2021

CLOVIS - Will this be the week Clovis High's football team breaks through for a win? Wildcats coach Cal Fullerton certainly hopes so. The Cats (0-4, 0-1 Class 6A District 2/5) take on Albuquerque High (2-3, 0-1) in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Leon Williams Stadium. The Bulldogs are coming off back-to-back losses, but showed well last week in a 16-6 district-opening setback against Eldorado. "They played Eldorado pretty close, and they played Volcano Vista (the week before) pretty...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Sep 28, 2021

PORTALES — After dropping the opening set, Clovis High’s volleyball team opened a 16-10 lead in Game 2 and appeared poised to square its match with Taos in Saturday’s Peyton Chavez Invitational at the Ram Athletic Center . Lady Tigers senior libero Daniella Cortez then took over on the service line, and 6-foot senior outside hitter/middle blocker Kiona Ely did the rest. With Cortez serving at 11-16, Taos scored the next seven points for the lead. The Lady Tigers ended the set on a 15-2 run and went on to win 25-15, 25-18...

  • Rams hope blowout win gets them going

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2021

RIO GRANDE — Portales High’s football team got off the schneid in a big way on Saturday. Now the Rams are looking to string some wins together. Sophomores Elijah Kladiihbah and Zane Mayberry combined for five touchdowns and PHS routed Rio Grande 53-0 in a game called on the New Mexico Activities Association’s 50-point mercy rule after Mayberry returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Both teams came into the tilt 0-4, but it was pretty clear from the get-go which side was stronger. “We needed this win big...

  • Clovis, Portales bands getting ready for competitions

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Sep 28, 2021

After a year of sitting on the sidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clovis and Portales bands are getting set for some lighthearted themes in their competitive band routines this month. Both the Clovis High and Portales High bands are heading to Texas this week to open up an October generally known as band competition season. “They’re extremely excited,” Clovis High Director Bill Allred said. “Last Friday was our first performance in two years. In years past … kids would be scared the first time. The kids were exci...

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Sep 28, 2021

On this date … 1976: The Luv-Way Adult Book Store in Clovis was attracting the attention of local law enforcement. Assistant District Attorney Bill Bonem issued a statement reporting “(T)here is no existing (statute) or county ordinance which prohibits the operation of such a business. “However, the New Mexico legislature in the 1973 session enacted a law prohibiting distribution of ‘sex-oriented’ material harmful to minors.’” Bonem said the law required the district attorney to “review material offered for sale and to det...

  • Homecoming, free barbecue and Mac Davis

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Sep 28, 2021

With Homecoming activities in full swing this week at Eastern New Mexico University, it’s only natural (at least, for me) to do some reminiscing about a long ago gathering of Greyhounds. I hit the newspaper archives for both the Portales News-Tribune and the Clovis News-Journal for a peek at Homecoming from a half century ago. Eastern’s 1971 Homecoming took place on Nov. 12-13, and was attended by a “near record crowd,” according to the News-Journal, although no specific numbe...

  • Opinion: Take elections away from politicians

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 28, 2021

I remember an old poster from my college days that asked, “What if they gave a war and nobody came?” That’s kind of what happened Sept. 18 in Washington D.C. Capitol Police who survived the battle on Jan. 6 were prepared for a second round. But this time nobody came. Sadly, I fear it was a reprieve, not a reversal of what has been a disturbing trend. During debate earlier this year on a bill that would have prohibited protests outside of private residences, members of the New Mexico Legislature talked about the threats they...

  • Opinion: Try for a normal without tyrants

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Sep 28, 2021

Are you enjoying this “new normal?” Neither am I. What can be done about it? Consider: Those who gained power or prestige by using the COVID panic will not willingly go back to the way life was before. They will have to be forced out. They’ll probably make this a crime before you get the chance. Try anyway. Even if you do successfully force them out, things can never go back to exactly the way they were before. COVID-19 is a new cold virus, added to over 200 cold viruses — rhi...

  • Opinion: Must be better way to catch tax evasion

    Pharos-Tribune, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 28, 2021

President Joe Biden’s administration says the intention for proposing a controversial plan to monitor private bank accounts is to catch tax cheats. But when looking at the actual language of the proposal, there must be a better way. One of many wish-list items on the Treasury Department’s proposed fiscal 2022 budget, the plan would force banks to report information about transactions for all accounts worth $600 or more to the Internal Revenue Service. Only aggregated data would be reported — not individual transactions. Banks...

The sales must be solely due to drought, causing an area to be designated as eligible for federal assistance. Livestock generally must be r...

  • Local gets spot on outdoor TV show

    Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Sep 28, 2021

It was a combination of skill as a hunting guide, some luck and shared faith that made Jared Piepkorn of Clovis a television personality. Piepkorn said he makes his living as a hunting guide, which requires intimate knowledge of areas in which he guides hunters and how to spot places where fish and game will be available for fishing and shooting. Last year, Piepkorn, who spends most of the year leading hunting and fly-fishing expeditions in New Mexico, Texas, Minnesota and...

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Sep 28, 2021

CLOVIS — A 16-year-old boy was driving the pickup involved in a pedestrian fatal on Aug. 29, the boy’s attorney said Monday. Clovis police said they are still investigating the crash that took the life of Martha Castillo as she walked across Thornton Street that night. Attorney Dan Lindsey said his client never saw what he hit and that he returned to the scene “within a very few minutes.” Lindsey said his client stopped his 2000 Ford Ranger moments after the collision, inspected the pickup to see if he could determi... Full story
