LUBBOCK — Minutes before kickoff of Friday night’s Clovis/Lubbock-Cooper football game, the Lubbock-Cooper players came through their balloon tunnel — a big skull with horns — before bursting through a black streamer with white letters that read: “Hustle, hit, never quit.” The Pirates adhered to that mantra, especially the third part, rallying from a three-score deficit in regulation, then from a one-score hole in overtime, and fashioned a 35-28 double overtime win over the Wildcats at First United Park’s Pirate Stadiu...
FLOYD — When it's your day, it's your day. The Floyd Broncos proved that in Friday afternoon's 6-Man football game against Hondo Valley, as the Broncos shut out the Eagles 32-0. The victory is the first of the season for Floyd (1-3), which had been outscored 167-20 through their first three games. "Hondo and us have had a history, and our kids have been hungry," Floyd coach Steve Foust said. "They've been working their backsides off. They have great attitudes and this is j...
PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico Greyhound volleyball squad had a successful night against Texas-Permian Basin Friday as it ended with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-21 Lone Star Conference sweep at Greyhound Arena. Texico native Jasmine Gannon led on the offensive side with a total of 10 kills and three blocks on the night, while Brooklyn Biel added nine kills and a block as the Greyhounds (5-9, 3-2 LSC) moved back above .500 in conference play. "Overall we did very well," said ENMU v...
PORTALES — When Hunter Hughes came to West Texas A&M, he said he expected the Buffs to be a national title contender immediately — and win the Wagon Wheel every year. As far as bulletin-board material goes, this is pretty low-hanging fruit for Eastern New Mexico University. Still, Greyhound coach Kelley Lee says, hard pass. "I don't know if it makes any difference," Lee said of Hughes' statement from last December. "They're so fired up to play, and it's such a rivalry. You...
PORTALES — Big plays sprung the Portales Rams in a 37-0 shutout victory over Socorro. The Rams (5-1) survived a slow start and scored three touchdowns of at least 20 yards, including two in the second half. Leading 9-0 with just 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Portales got the ball at their own 29, following a Braden Bridges interception as Socorro tried to go for it on fourth down in Ram territory. Tyrese Dawson dropped back and found a wide-open Juan Espinoza over t...

On this date ... 1972: A "spectacular train-truck smash-up" took place on the state line between Farwell and Texico. The accident caused no injuries, but "left a wide area of the two towns knee deep in sandwich bags and white paint," according to the Clovis News-Journal. The train hit about 10 feet behind the driver of a two-unit semi, rupturing both trailers, which were carrying restaurant supplies and five-gallon buckets of white paint and paint thinner. The debris was...
ODESSA, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women’s soccer team has had plenty of overtime this year, and they haven’t been fortunate with an 0-2-2 record heading into Friday’s Lone Star Conference game at Texas-Permian Basin. The bad breaks continued, as Ariel Roybal scored on a deflected free kick 4:39 into the first overtime, and the Falcons grabbed their first LSC win by blanking the Greyhounds 1-0. Chenoa Crites stopped 12 shots, a season high for the Greyhounds, to take a close game in a season with nailbiter...
CLOVIS — A $30,000 grant to fulfill “unmet needs” of the Aug. 28 library-shooting victims was approved Friday for management by the United Way of Eastern New Mexico. The funds were generated from private donors the past four weeks by a committee of the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce. “Everybody wanted to do something,” said Ernie Kos, the chamber’s executive director. “We raised more money than we expected. We’re excited that the experts are going to take care of it.” The chamber’s “Library Victim Advocacy Fund...
