The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 3, 2019

Law officers in Roosevelt County have found human remains in the trunk of a burnt vehicle, Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker confirmed on Thursday afternoon. Parker declined to say when or where the remains were found, but District Attorney Andrea Reeb said the region's Major Crimes Unit was activated on Wednesday afternoon. “This is being investigated as suspicious,” Parker said. “And we will not release anything further as the investigation is ongoing.” Reeb said she is not aware of any arrests or charges. She referre...

  • ENMU hopes to have phone system up Friday

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 3, 2019

PORTALES — There’s a busy signal throughout Eastern New Mexico University, and crews are busy trying to fix it. University officials are hopeful phone service will be back up on Friday morning, three days after it first went out of service. Clark Elswick, the system chief information officer for ENMU, said crews with CenturyLink are working on the assumption the phone system was knocked out due to heavy rains that hit Portales on Tuesday. But Elswick — talking via cell phone — added the ongoing precipitation has made diagnosi...

  • Trees going down on Clovis' Main Street

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 3, 2019

CLOVIS — The root of the problem is the roots. So the trees on South Main Street are going away. “The tree roots have caused the sidewalk to buckle and create a hazard,” City Manager Justin Howalt wrote in an email on Thursday. “We are replacing the sidewalks between 4th and Grand. It is the same scope project that we completed between 5th and 4th.” Howalt estimated nine or 10 trees will be removed because of the root issues. We will have a more complete story in Sunday’s paper....

  • District play awaits Wildcats

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 1, 2019

CLOVIS — Clovis’ football team owns the tasks of trying to rebound from a decisive loss, trying to win on its Homecoming night, and trying to get district play off to a positive start, all in one game. When Sandia visits Leon Williams Stadium this Friday night (7 p.m.), the Matadors will indeed be the Wildcats’ Homecoming opponent and the first District 2/5-6A team on their schedule. And against Sandia, the ’Cats are hoping to respond well, hoping to shake off last week’s...

  • ENMU week 4 wrap: Hounds survive

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 1, 2019

PORTALES - 564 total yards. 515 rushing yards. 100 penalty yards. 31 second-half points. And a little lightning thrown in for good measure. It was kind of a zany game for Eastern New Mexico's football team against Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night, as the Greyhounds churned it out on the ground, played a little sloppy in the infraction department, forced Kingsville into some sloppy play in the turnover department, and were delayed an hour due to lightning. Ultimately, though...

  • Hounds heading to Midwestern State

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 1, 2019

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico's football team is in kind of a dizzying stretch. The Greyhounds won their season opener at home in dramatic fashion, played consecutive road games, then returned home last week to prevail against Texas A&M-Kingsville — and a prolonged lightning delay — 48-34. This week they turn right around and go back on the road, this time to Wichita Falls, Texas, to face Midwestern State. Game time is 7 p.m. Central Mountain Time. Each team is 3-1 overa...

  • Rested Rams heading north

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 1, 2019

PORTALES — Based off of last year’s game, a 47-0 victory, the Portales Rams should be favorites when they meet Santa Fe Capital on the road Thursday night. But based on recent observations, the 2019 Capital Jaguars are not the 2018 Capital Jaguars. Portales coach Jaime Ramirez, able to take advantage of last week’s bye, went to scout the Jaguars’ 27-0 victory over defending 4A champion Taos and came away impressed. “They're a good football team,” Ramirez said of the Jaguars (3-2), who have outscored their last two opponen...

The first weekend of October is usually a crucial milepost in high school football. But for Elida, Friday goes beyond crucial. The Tigers will host fellow six-man unbeaten Springer/Maxwell in one of the area’s district matchups. Here’s a look at that and the other local games: Springer/Maxwell (6-0, 1-0) at Elida (6-0, 2-0), 7 p.m. Friday Undefeated district rivals. That’s the crux of what you need to know about this one. “It’s the game we’ve been waiting on all year,” Tigers head coach Jereme Woodruff said. “Both coming in u...
