Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 5, 2024

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, on behalf of the longtime manager of Allen Theatres in Clovis, filed a lawsuit Monday against the theater group. Abby Parish is alleging Allen Theatres committed age discrimination against him. Parrish, who’d worked at the Clovis movie theater since 1991, alleges Russell Allen, the president of the company, “forced him to retire in September 2020, and refused to return him to work in March 2021 (after pandemic restrictions were lifted) because he was 72 years old,” accor...

Kwesi Felix Boafo, an Eastern New Mexico University graduate student from Ghana, stood over a new polymerase chain reaction machine, wrapped in plastic. He looked at it eagerly, like a kid hovering over a gift on Christmas eve.   Over the next several months, Felix Boafo will use the machine – which amplifies and detects DNA – for his upcoming graduate project: Determining liver abscess in cattle. A recent West Texas A&M University report revealed this "can lead to more th...

  • Faith: Counting the seconds until the truth that can change world

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 1, 2024

I can sleep through almost anything, but some things are guaranteed to get your attention. Recently, my wife and I were sitting at home watching television, and I’m sure I was flirting with drowsiness (since a couch and a TV are almost as conducive to sleep for me as a pillow and a bed), when we were both suddenly jolted as fully awake as we’ve ever been in our lives. Retina-searing light flashed through the room and an ear-drum-splitting boom rattled the pictures on the wal...

  • Centennial shuts out Lady Cats

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 1, 2024

Centennial got an early goal, then stayed put for most of the rest of the day. Clovis High’s soccer girls, though, couldn’t find the net and the Las Cruces-based Lady Hawks added a late insurance tally to claim a 2-0 win on Saturday at Leon Williams Stadium. The match was a makeup of a Sept. 21 contest postponed due to inclement weather. Sophomore forward Cleo Coca tallied both goals for Centennial (7-7), which was in control much of the way and kept the Lady Cats (4-8-2) from finding many opportunities. “We created some chan...

After reaching the Class 4A state championship game in 2023, Portales High’s football team has had a bit of a rough go this season, in part due to injuries. Still, the Rams (3-3, 1-1 District 2-4A) find themselves in reasonably good shape in the district after Friday’s 34-21 victory over Valencia at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium. They’ll try to keep it that way on Friday when they visit Silver (2-4, 0-2) in a 7 p.m. kickoff. Things haven’t gone all that well this season for the Colts, either, but Rams coach Jaime R...

  • Opinion: Pretty likely to be uneventful election cycle in our state

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 1, 2024

Other than the presidential election and a super-tight congressional race down south, it’s a fairly tame general election in New Mexico. It could have been a more consequential year, with a mid-term, term-limited governor struggling to keep her party in lockstep on issues like crime containment and school calendars — while every seat in both the state House and Senate are up for election. Currently the New Mexico Senate is run by the Democrats, who command a 27-15 supermajority. All 42 Senate seats are up for election thi...

  • Opinion: Education doesn't have single-term solution

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 1, 2024

When new Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham fired her first education secretary, Karen Trujillo, in July 2019 after just six months on the job, I thought it was a rash decision. But to be fair, I was biased. Like many people in Las Cruces, I knew Karen a little bit, and liked her. Still, the governor’s explanation seemed weak. “It is absolutely imperative that we genuinely transform public education in this state,” she said. “We must identify a vibrant and ambitious new leader for the Public Education Department as soon as we can....

  • Seniors voice concerns at hearing

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 1, 2024

A big topic of discussion at a Friday hearing on senior services in the Clovis area: The driveway into the new Hillcrest Senior Life Center is too narrow. “The entryway is kind of narrow. … There’s really only room for one vehicle to come in and out,” said David Briseño, director of Outreach and Corporate Compliance for La Casa Senior Center and La Casa Family Health Center. He moderated the hearing held at the Hillcrest Senior Life Center on East Seventh Street. “The city is aware of the situation and working to alleviate...

  • Opinion: Street, border security hinge on your vote

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 1, 2024

Are you better off than you were four years ago? That simple question to America’s voters was coined in 1980 by my father when he debated Jimmy Carter on TV. Part of my father’s closing statement, it probably won the night for him. Since then, it’s become a question that has been asked to voters in some form or another in every televised presidential debate. My father followed it up with several other rhetorical questions that are just as relevant today as they were 44 years...

  • Not everyone wants Willie for president

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 1, 2024

I write about politics about as well and as often as I write about sports. And you’ve never seen any of my sports writing, have you. It’s because there ain’t none. I mean I do wish I had the political writing skills of the late, great Molly Ivins. She sure could write entertaining political stuff. One of the nicest compliments I ever received on my politics was from the Bossman here at The Eastern New Mexico News, who long-ago simply said: “You know, I can’t tell what your politics are.” But (pssst) I’ll tell you, dear rea...

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 1, 2024

The fight over the New Mexico Public Education Department’s rule requiring 180 instructional days — a plan that has drawn criticism from teachers, administrators and lawmakers for nearly a year — will continue after a judge delayed issuing a ruling in a key lawsuit. In a hearing Monday, 5th Judicial District Judge Dustin Hunter heard arguments from attorneys representing the New Mexico School Superintendents Association and more than 50 school districts across the state, which sued the Public Education Department over the 1...
