When I was a child and our family lived in Kansas City, Mother often took Susie and me into the city to explore museums or shop at Macy’s. Those excursions were recreational and educational. Mother would pack a lunch and then at mealtime, we headed into the nearest Katz Drug Store where she bought us cokes at the counter. There we would eat our lunch. Downtown Kansas City was a remarkable world and Susie and I were in awe of the inner city energy and actions going on. I r... Full story
“It’s not personal; it’s business.” I first heard that cold phrase in the 1972 movie The Godfather. Mafia hoodlums would assure the fellow they’re about to “off” that he should feel better about being “whacked” since the aforementioned whacking is “not personal; it’s business.” I’m told that business tycoon Donald Trump uses the phrase on his so-called “reality” TV show The Apprentice. No surprise. But “the Donald” quite aside, it’s clear that in our culture, all a person has to do to be considered a “success” is to have a... Full story

Hazel Miller likes to play cards with her friends at the Senior Citizen Resident Center and read books. “You’ve got to have some romance” to make it worth a read, said Miller, who turns 100 on Monday. If there is a secret to Hazel’s long life, just don’t ask her. “I don’t know,” Miller said. “I had a good doctor; he didn’t give me medicine I didn’t need.” Mille...
Portales Fire Chief Gary Nuckols believes children are never too young to learn about the dangers of fire. Pre-school and kindergarten aged children were given tours of the fire department this week as Fire Prevention Week. “We target our young kids, and always have, to start that education early on,” said Nuckols, who said firefighters have also visited local schools this week. “It tends to stay with them or at least, it seems like it does.” He said firefighters have made contact with about 800 children in all, teachin...
I really had a great time covering the Eastern New Mexico University homecoming last weekend. Being an ENMU alumni, it was nice for me to be able to participate in and enjoy homecoming for the first time in my history with the university. As a college student, I not only went to school full-time, but usually worked multiple jobs too, so homecoming was not something I got the luxury of enjoying. It was nice to be able to this time. I’m not sure if the highlight was taking pictures of excited children catching candy at the p...

A drop in the water levels at Sumner Lake has prompted state park officials to close its boat ramps and prohibit boating. “Water levels are less than we hoped for this season; we want to make sure that we safeguard boaters from potential hazards and unpredictable lake conditions,” said David Sanchez, park superintendent. “Fortunately, a salvage order is in effect through November first, fishing is good, and anglers have been successful from the shoreline.” The concern is that a lower water level prevents park staff from la...
