  • Wildcats hope to earn home return

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 8, 2019

CLOVIS — Clovis’ football team likes the confines of Leon Williams Stadium. The Wildcats like the stands full of fans cheering them on, like the familiarity of their field, like having to run from the locker room door through a balloon tunnel to reach their Friday-night destination, as opposed to taking a long, long bus ride. So, here’s the thing. When the Wildcats host Manzano on Friday at 7 p.m. they will be playing their last regular-season home game. As in, last time...

PORTALES — Coming off one of its tougher challenges of the season, Portales High’s football team could be in for another test this week in its final pre-district game. Defending Class 3A state champion Dexter awaits the Rams on Friday night in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Dexter, matching teams with identical 5-1 records. “Dexter’s skill guys are extremely fast,” PHS coach Jaime Ramirez said. “On offense, they’re a multi-formation team. Their linemen have good size.” The Demons, coming off a bye last week, have posted four wins by at...

PORTALES — The assembly line keeps moving for Eastern New Mexico’s football team. And it’s getting faster. Fresh off a comeback road victory against a formidable Midwestern State team, the Greyhounds return home to face Tarleton State, another Lone Star Conference foe. This one is 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the LSC, and is ranked fourth in the nation in the AFCA Division II poll. The Texans, ranked lower only than Valdosta State, Ferris State and Minnesota State, even received one first-place vote in this week’s poll. And that is...

  • God knows exactly what kind of Light we need

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Oct 8, 2019

Are you considering trying to buy a light bulb? Good luck to you. A few evenings ago, my wife and I were in Amarillo baby-sitting (playing with, laughing with, snuggling with, rollicking and frollicking with) some sweet grandkids. At some point, I discovered both that my phone was needing a charge and that I’d forgotten the cable charged with supplying that need. Eight% left. Red light blinking weakly. Screen dimming to conserve its faltering power. My phone! Perilously c...
