The blaze appeared to be contained by 7 p.m. Clovis Deputy Fire Chief Terrance Lizardo said no one was living in the home and “the ceiling was missing, which was why it headed out the roof so fast.” Liz... Full story

I was telling him the story about how I got the one, last merit badge that I needed to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. If you don’t know anything about Boy Scoutin’, one of the things one has to do to become an Eagle Scout is earn 21 merit badges. To earn one, you have to show you know something and can do something related to the subject of the merit badge. When I was a kid...

In the men’s contest, St. Mary’s (6-2-2, 2-0 LSC) managed only three shots on goal to just one for the Greyhounds (2-3-3, 1-1). the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 8, 2024

FRIONA – Clovis High’s volleyball team took a while to get going, and by the time it did the hole was a bit too step for them to climb out. Texas Class 3A power Friona dominated the opening set, then kept the Lady Wildcats at bay the rest of the way to claim a 25-10, 25-22, 25-20 victory on Saturday. Playing without senior hitter Ashlynn Evans (shoulder) and a couple of other regulars, the Lady Cats (6-9) didn’t have enough firepower to stay with the Squaws (25-7), who are ranked 29th out of 200 schools in Texas Class 3A. ...

Clovis High went back and forth for 80 minutes with Hobbs in Saturday's District 4-5A boys soccer match at Leon Williams Stadium. It didn't take the Eagles long to break through, though, when the contest went into overtime. Senior Alexis Sanchez found an opening just inside the 18-yard box and punched the ball into the net just 32 seconds into sudden-death overtime to give the Eagles a 1-0 victory. It was a tough loss for the Wildcats (12-3, 1-1 district), snapping their...

  • Hounds fall to No. 11 CWU

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 8, 2024

With dour faces and schlepping cleats, Eastern New Mexico University football players plodded out of their locker room following Saturday's 44-28 homecoming loss to No. 11 Central Washington at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium. The problem isn't losing to CWU. The Wildcats are the 11th-best Division II squad in the nation, and could be a darkhorse to win a national title this winter. What is the problem, however, is that it was the Greyhounds' third-straight loss. While com...

  • Opinion: VP debate clearly went to Vance

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 8, 2024

Tim Walz did a lot better than I thought he would in his debate with J.D. Vance on Oct. 1. Walz didn’t knock himself out of the race like Joe Biden. And he flashed some of the human skills and policy smarts that got him elected and re-elected as a congressman and governor by the good people of Minnesota. But Vance clearly won – throwing the baseball equivalent of a one-hit shutout. He quickly took charge of the debate and showed the 40 million Americans tuning in he was the...

  • Opinion: If true, allegations must be prosecuted

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 8, 2024

It still seems so surreal. Sean Combs’s arrest last month on charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy represents a stunning reversal of fortune for the hip-hop impresario. As recently as a year ago, Combs was feted as an industry visionary before a sudden series of sexual assault accusations emerged. Prosecutors said in an indictment that, since 2008, Combs (aka Diddy) has been the puppet master of a colossal criminal outfit that included employees and e...

  • Opinion: Rest in peace, Kris Kristofferson

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 8, 2024

Every now and then, someone comes along who makes a unique contribution to the world in which he live. Kris Kristofferson, who died recently at age 88, was that sort of man. Kristofferson hit Nashville and the country music scene in the 1970s, first as a broom-pushing songwriter on Music Row, then as a gravel-voiced singer/songwriter on the Nashville scene, and finally as a movie star in Hollywood. But before all that, he was a standout athlete in rugby, football and boxing, a Rhodes Scholar and an Army officer. He was even...

  • Getting in character

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 8, 2024

Life can feel too complicated, moving too fast nowadays. Tensions are rising in the Middle East. An upcoming election could further split an already divisive country. Not to mention deadlines, commitments, bills and ruminating over the things you forgot to do – and things you wish you didn't do – that can feel all consuming. But simplicity and a slower pace was found inside Eastern New Mexico University's Golden Student Success Center as the High Plains Cosplay Club took pla...

Perez took the top job with the marching band following the retirement of Bill Allred earlier this year....
