the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 14, 2022

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State’s Zach Bronkhorst made a costly early mistake, but he recovered in plenty of time to help the third-ranked Rams remain unbeaten. The senior quarterback finished with four touchdown passes on Saturday night, and the Rams held Eastern New Mexico University to just three points the rest of the way en route to a 28-9 Lone Star Conference victory. Junior Cason Ochoa stepped in front of an ASU receiver and returned an interception 35 yards on the game’s second play from scrimmage, giving ENMU (1-5,...

  • Lujan Grisham, Ronchetti make late push with second debate

Robert Nott The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 12, 2022

New Mexico voters will get a second — and likely last — chance to watch the two most prominent gubernatorial candidates square off in a face-to-face debate. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Mark Ronchetti are scheduled to take part in a one-hour debate sponsored by KOAT-TV, the Albuquerque Journal and KKOB-AM Wednesday night. Libertarian Karen Bedonie will not participate. As was the case when they met in KOB-TV's live debate on Sept. 30, voters should expect Ronchetti and Lujan Grisham to again tangle on high-profile issues l...

  • Activist 'answered a call'

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 11, 2022

Mark Lee Dickson is not acting alone in his quest to make Clovis a "Sanctuary City for the Unborn." "All I did was answer a call," the Longview, Texas, man said last week. "All I did was go where the Lord was calling me to go." "I did not go forward thinking I could do this on my own. I went forward saying, 'God help me. God help this city. I can't do this alone. We can't do this alone. We are going to need your help.'" Look up Dickson on the internet and you will learn of...

  • Faith: God our guide when we're 'fish out of water'

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 11, 2022

A fish out of water. It’s rather amazing how easy it is to be one of those finny creatures. We’re not talking here about lip injections and a person (I’m avoiding sexism here) who paid good money to look like a largemouth bass. What I’m talking about is being “out of your element.” That happens to all of us from time to time, maybe right where we live and right where we’re sitting. You get called on to do something way out of your usual area of expertise or routine. You...

  • A debut that exceeded anyone's expectations

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Oct 11, 2022

He occasionally played at a time when most fans were filing out of the stadium. They didn’t care to take the time to look, to search for the details in his decisions or notice the little extra zip on his passes, the quickness as he evaded the rush and scurried out of bounds. Until Saturday, Behren Morton anonymously played when the credits rolled. The game was over one way or another. A year ago, the true freshman Texas Tech quarterback took a few snaps in a win over K...

  • Lady Rams fall to Friona, Highland Park

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 11, 2022

FRIONA — Portales High’s volleyball squad stepped across the state line to face a couple of rugged foes on Saturday, losing to Amarillo Highland Park 25-21, 25-13, 25-23 and to Friona 12-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-22. Despite the setbacks, coach Jacki Bailey said she thought the Lady Rams (6-10) competed fairly well. “It’s not the result we wanted for sure, but we played well in (large) spurts,” Bailey said. “Highland Park is really good, and Friona is solid.” In the opener against the Lady Hornets (17-4 after beating Frion...

  • ENMU plays to scoreless draw

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 11, 2022

PORTALES - One thing about playing defense - if you do it well, you're rarely out of any contest. Still, you have to score to win, and the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team couldn't do that on Saturday, playing Texas A&M International to a scoreless tie in Lone Star Conference action at Greyhound Stadium. "We had our chances, but we couldn't capitalize on them," first-year ENMU women's coach Eric Belcher said. "We struggle at times on offense, but what can you...

  • Rams open district play at Academy

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 11, 2022

PORTALES — The real season begins this week for Portales High’s football team. Coming off an open date, the Rams take a 6-1 record into Friday’s 3 p.m. District 4-6/4A opener at Albuquerque Academy, a game which gets an early start because the Chargers’ field does not have lights. Meantime, Academy brings a 5-2 mark into the contest, so it figures this matchup could go a long way towards determining the eventual district champion. “They’re a very good team,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “They’re very aggressive defens...

  • Fire departments hosting benefit lunch in Portales

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Oct 11, 2022

We could all learn some lessons from the folks who volunteer for our community fire departments. One of the best is the concept of “mutual aid.” Paul Luscombe, chief of the Dora Fire Department, defines it officially as this: “A joint powers agreement between departments which states that we will come to the other’s aid if requested on any kind of call.” Kellie Bilbrey, a longtime volunteer with the Milnesand Fire Department, concurs. “Mutual aid for us is the knowledge that w...

  • Opinion: Climate change takes color from season

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 11, 2022

This is altogether anecdotal, so I won’t pretend it’s based on scientific observation, but I’ve noticed something in my annual trips to Arkansas for a Thanksgiving get-together in the Ozark Mountains. The autumn leaves seem to be peaking earlier. October is the best time to see a brilliant display of colors in the Ozark Plateau. It’s as if God painted the mountains just for our viewing pleasure. But by the end of November, when I take my trip, the fiery splash of the red, orange, yellow and green broadleaf colors have al...

  • Opinion: Don't care about fake laws, crimes

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Oct 11, 2022

Being political leads to unfortunate outcomes. Politics never makes people act smart. I don’t think federal agents -- FBI or anyone else -- have any business digging for things over which to prosecute Hunter Biden. I don’t find federal agents credible. When someone is targeted for political reasons, whether Donald Trump or Hunter Biden, it makes those targeting them look unintelligent and corrupt. Maybe because they are unintelligent and corrupt -- as bad as their target, or...

  • Opinion: Most important thing is helping voters to vote

    Tom Lopach, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 11, 2022

With midterm elections fast approaching, we should be doing everything we can to help the people of New Mexico participate in our democracy and have their voices heard at the ballot box. That’s why the Center for Voter Information (CVI) was disappointed to see the op-ed published in the Eastern New Mexico News and Quay County Sun -- “Register to vote -- and watch out for mailers,” on Oct. 4. The op-ed has the potential to create distrust about the important work that civic engagement organizations do to empower voters in Ne...

The medical center pharmacy started administering the doses of the vaccine three weeks ago, Kelley said. Once someone has had their primary shots –first and second—in one brand, they can take this booster t...

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 11, 2022

The Clovis City Commission has scheduled a “special session” for Thursday to consider a “sanctuary city for the unborn” ordinance. Mayor Mike Morris said District 3 Commissioner David Bryant requested the special session. The meeting is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. and there is only one item on the agenda: “Request for approval of introduction of an ordinance requiring abortion providers in the city of Clovis to comply with federal law.” Multiple attempts to reach Bryant were unsuccessful. Morris said last week he pla...
