  • Wildcats flying high

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 12, 2019

CLOVIS — Friday had to be the coldest night of Clovis High’s football season yet. But the Wildcats seem to be heating up at just the right time. With a relentless offense and punishing defense, the ’Cats walloped District 2/5-6A foe Manzano 44-9 in their last regular-season game at Leon Williams Stadium. They 35-ed a district opponent just a week after 50-ing another one, Sandia. As a result, the Wildcats are 2-0 in the ever-crucial district standings. “Yeah, not bad, not bad...

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 12, 2019

CLOVIS — On a cold, windy Thursday night, it didn’t look good early on for the Clovis High girls soccer team. The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 12, 2019

The Clovis boys came away with the win, thanks to a 1-2 finish from Jerrick Maldonado and T.J. Gregg, while the girls finished third. Only four teams competed in each varsity race, with Randall, Palo Duro and Plainview also taking part. “The teams that were there were good and competitive and gave us a chance to race hard,” Clovis coach Mark Bussen said. “That’s what we needed.” Clovis scored 24 points in the boys comp...

PORTALES — It was a great day for Johan Portales. It wasn’t nearly as great for the home team in Portales. • In tribute: Plastic surgeon loved travel, photography

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Oct 12, 2019

CLOVIS — Mac Rowley’s time on Earth might be measured in his thousands of photographs, or in the thousands of lives he touched — patients, students and a large, close-knit family of professionals. Dr. Milton Rowley specialized in plastic surgery, which he practiced over 40 years in Lubbock, the nearest place for his career to his hometown of Clovis. Much of the rest of the family stayed on the New Mexico side of the border, but they convened in Clovis often for holidays. Mac would usually be the one to take the group photo...

  • Artificial intelligence isn't always the problem

    Karl Terry|Updated Oct 12, 2019

Some days I feel like I want to get off the artificial intelligence train at the next stop. Problem is the train’s AI components probably wouldn’t recognize what I was saying if I said “next stop.” A lot of folks have been hating on the self-checkout stands because they take jobs away from people. I don’t think that has happened. Now they have a guy standing at the entrance doing nothing but tagging return items. They have another guy at the exit waiting to check the items in...
