Sadoth Chavez said he killed Felix Bass of Littlefield in self-defense during a game of dice near Melrose. District Judge J. C. Compton declined to accept Chavez’ plea when he said he killed in self-defense, and so his attorney told the court Chavez “realized that he went farther than self-defense in slashing Bass’ throat with a broken neck of a whiskey bottle,” the Clovis News-Journal reported. DALLAS - The feistiness of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally surfaced Tuesday, two days after the most one-sided loss of his 36-year tenure in Dallas. As fans have hoped, Jones is finally threatening to hold some people accountable around here. Starting with radio hosts. Jones, as you cannot possibly be unaware, makes two appearances a week on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) during the NFL season. And when he was asked about his offseason mistakes and frequent unwillingness to spend...

  • Opinion: Hearts and meatballs have things in common

    Curtis Shelburne, Correspondent|Updated Oct 15, 2024

I don’t remember how old I was, but I do remember being hungry. What I’ll describe took place, I think I recall, on a Sunday morning, and I know it was many decades ago. I feel sure that I was minding my own business. I know my mother was minding hers for that morning as she happened to be doing some cooking, probably for a church dinner, as I happened to be making my way through the kitchen. The details have long since become a bit foggy. I recall that, on a platter, bro...

  • Opinion: Climate change is a real issue in this election

    Tom McDonald|Updated Oct 15, 2024

Set aside for a moment the devastation that has hit the Southeast after back-to-back hurricanes. Turn instead to what’s happening in our little corner of the planet. Studies suggest the human body can’t survive outdoors in sustained temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit or more. And yet, Phoenix, Ariz., just endured a summer that included 56 days of 110-degree temps. And here it is October and they’re still cooking under 100-degree days. Over here in New Mexico, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration repor...

  • Opinion: Trump tactics are downright dangerous

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 15, 2024

Over the past few months, Donald Trump has stoked the flames of white resentment on the campaign trail. Speaking to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt last week, the former president — who once referred to himself as a “gene believer” and has a known obsession with genetics and bloodlines — accused migrants coming to the southern border of being “criminals” and having “bad genes.” It’s the latest in a long line of bigoted and xenophobic statements from Trump, ranging fr...

  • Opinion: Harris interviews scare Democrat Party

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 15, 2024

Jeeze. In just one day everyone in the country saw why the people in charge of the Democrat Party want to keep Kamala Harris off TV. And in just one day everyone in the country saw why Donald Trump wants our sitting vice president on TV as much as possible. The Trump campaign wants Harris to make a hundred more unscripted appearances on her media tour – even on safe, friendly and embarrassing liberal political places like “The View,” the Howard Stern radio show and “The Late S...

Cathy Cook Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 15, 2024

The candidates are scheduled to debate again on Oct. 27...

  • Opinion: Nobody throws dirt clods at the radio guy

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 15, 2024

Nobody throws dirt at the radio guy Stuff happening around me brought back the memory of putting boots on the ground in New Mexico 35 years ago this month. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta wrapped up Sunday. All of the TV coverage it got reminded me of rolling into town in my old car during the big event in 1989. I couldn’t find a place to stay anywhere. But when I went to a campground on the city’s west side the folks there said I could sleep on my cot in their rec room for the princely sum of $10 a night. A construction proje...

  • Tax exemptions for veterans on ballot

Staff and wire reports, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 15, 2024

New Mexico voters will decide the fates of two proposals that would expand property tax exemptions for veterans who own homes in the state — and mean increased tax rates for other homeowners. The proposals are among four constitutional amendments appearing on this year's general election ballot after being approved by the Legislature. House Minority Whip Alan Martinez, R-Bernalillo, who was one of the sponsors of both veteran-related measures, said the proposals could make New Mexico a more attractive place to veterans. A...
