    West Texas A&M received 15 of a possible 18 first-place votes in the Lone Star Conference’s South Division preseason volleyball poll. The Lady Buffs, who have made 14 NCAA postseason appearances in the last 15 seasons, tallied 103 total points in the poll to easily top Abilene Christian. The Wildcats collected 65 points to finish second. Abilene Christian received two first-place votes, while Tarleton State received one.     In an effort to ensure safety, PNM Gas Company personnel spent Thursday probing gas lines throughout the city and found no new natural gas leaks. Officials with the company said they will also search today for any leaks in the 88 miles of natural gas pipeline in Portales. On Wednesday afternoon, city officials evacuated several homes in the block of North Avenue A and Olive Street after an underground pipeline ruptured, causing natural gas to seep above ground.     Born in October 1925 in Roosevelt County to F.M. and Zona Blair, Joe Blair, 78, has called Portales home most of his life. Blair’s father homesteaded land in Curry County in 1906. He and his mother moved to Portales in 1920. Blair attended school in Portales. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Navy serving as a gunner’s mate. His four-year stint earned him 13 battle stars. After his discharge, he returned to Clovis, where he met his future wife, Dorothy Stanfield. The couple married in 1946. In 1956, he ope...

A search committe will publish a request for proposals for the job next week with a deadline to receive applications of Aug. 1. The committee will make recommendations at an Aug. 20 board meeting and the board will interview candidates at a special meeting in late August or early September, members said.     The City Commission voted Thursday to accept the Levine Building on Main Street as a donation from its current owners. The city of Clovis will accept the building on the basis that current federal and county tax liens on the building will be waived, the commission said. According Susan Freed, a Santa Fe architect with the state Main Street organization, the building can be renovated for about $116,174. The renovated building could be sold for in excess of $200,000.     A motorist led a Curry County deputy in hot pursuit on dirt roads southwest of Clovis early Wednesday morning before escaping, according to Undersheriff Doug Bowman.
