  • Johnson: Children heavily impacted by pet losses

    Sharna Johnson

The connection between children and animals can be nothing short of magical — be it their lack of programmed perspectives, their pure, uninhibited approach to life or their inability to see differences, focusing instead on what they have in common — kids and critters can relate on a visceral level that bridges the human-animal divide. This easy relationship lends itself well to the addition of pets in childhood, and children enjoy the company of their animal friends, oft...

  • Voters going off beaten path

STAFF WRITER [email protected] With two unpopular candidates running in the 2016 presidential election, voters across the nation are pledging their support to third-party candidates. • ENMU women fall to Pioneers

Staff report PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team hung in defensively, but could get little going on offense on Friday night and the Greyhounds dropped a 1-0 Lone Star Conference decision to Texas Woman’s at Greyhound Stadium. With the victory, the Pioneers (8-6-1, 4-5-0 LSC) stayed ahead of the Hounds in league standings, and also avenged a 2-0 setback to ENMU on Sept. 25 in a match played at Texas A&M-Commerce due to unplayable field conditions because of heavy rain at TWU’s field in nearby...

  • Rams thump Warriors, improve to 7-1

    Matthew Asher

STAFF WRITER [email protected] The Portales Rams made good use of their bye week as they utterly dominated their Class 4-4A opponent Ruidoso 58-23 Friday night. Last year, the Rams mercy-ruled the Warriors 54-0 with the game ending in the third quarter. This year the result wasn’t much different as Portales (7-1, 2-0 district) imposed its will throughout the game, never giving Ruidoso (5-4, 2-1) a chance for an upset. Portales coach Jaime Ramirez giving his starters the entire fourth quarter off to give his backups some p... Full story

  • Clovis whips Santa Fe for second district win

SPORTS EDITOR [email protected] To say the Clovis High football team put it on Santa Fe Friday night would be a huge understatement, with Clovis ending the game a minute into the second half and holding the Demons to negative-24 yards on offense. Seth Lopez led the way for the Wildcats (5-3, 2-1 district) with 108 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while Micah Gray and Andrew Jaramillo had 87 and 56 yards on the ground, respectively, and two scores each. Skyler Wadas got in on the scoring action as well, rushing on a...

  • Three appointed to Planning and Zoning

Staff Writer [email protected] The Clovis City Commission approved three appointments to the Planning and Zoning Commission during its regular meeting Thursday, but not before a commissioner encouraged a candidate to withdraw based on lack of impartiality and prejudice. The assertions, leveled by Commissioner Tom Martin against Carolyn Spence, were denied. Spence, who was seeking reappointment, was one of 10 applicants for three terms that will begin next month. The two other vacancies were created by Terry Moberly and Jon...
