Editor's note: This is the first of two stories profiling local inductees into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame. A profile of Tony Romero will run in Wednesday's edition of The News. CLOVIS — There was a time Brooks Byrd and Muhammad Ali were on the same page. Literally. A newspaper clipping displaying boxing rankings from December 1974 showed Ali — the heavyweight legend — and Romero — then an up-and-coming junior welterweight — on the same page of the paper. The following year, 1975, was big for both fighters. Ali won '... Full story
The third week of October is drawing to a close, and there were big local high school games throughout the region. Friday Melrose 38, Gateway Christian 36 MELROSE — The Buffaloes improved to 2-2 against Eight-man, District 3 opponents in memorable fashion. Slipping past a highly-touted, state-recognized district opponent by two should be considered impressive indeed. Playing its first home game since Sept. 21, Melrose hung on against Gateway and won for the second straight week. In doing so, the Buffaloes dealt the Warriors t...
CLOVIS — One Clovis resident is proving that with some wood, a few screws, a drill and a big heart you can feed the hungry or simply lift a spirit. Anyone driving past 2004 Cameo St. in the past week may have seen the "blessing box" now located in the front yard, stocked with various food and hygiene items for anyone to take. While Janice Lopez said the blessing box idea was something she saw on the photo-sharing website Pinterest, the concept of helping the needy goes back t... Full story
CLOVIS — A little sour must come with the sweet. But for Clovis High’s football team, it was only the latter on Friday night. The Wildcats were home sweet home, playing at Leon Williams Stadium for the first time this month. And in those friendly surroundings, the ’Cats put a 47-0 hurt on District 2/5-6A rival Eldorado, improving to 2-1 district and 4-5 overall in the process. Sweet indeed. “It is,” Clovis head coach Cal Fullerton said. “I told our team before the game we had...
ELIDA — In a season where it's beaten nearly everything that’s come at it, the Elida Tiger football team was all but expected to mercy-rule Hondo Valley, celebrate an easy homecoming win and breeze right into a first-round bye. Somebody forgot to tell the Eagles, but the Tiger offense eventually overwhelmed Hondo Valley to finish out the six-man regular season with a 77-47 win and a 4-0 run through District 1 play. Elida expected to be the second seed, and receive a fir...
PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team has two home games remaining in its 2018 campaign. It’s hoping it can earn a third. Following a 2-0 run this week by beating Heartland Conference foes St. Edward’s 2-1 Saturday and Dallas Baptist 3-0 Thursday, the Greyhounds (8-6-2, 6-4-2 HC) have put themselves on the doorstep of the Heartland Conference playoffs. The six-team playoff field includes automatic spots for the North, West and South division winners, followe...

CANYON, Texas — If Saturday was a true preview for the Lone Star Conference championship, it’s fair to say Eastern New Mexico’s women are ready to go. Mercy Rotich won Saturday’s meet at West Texas A&M by more than a minute and a half, and Eastern’s five scoring runners finished in the top 12 overall to give the Greyhounds a 33-point day to edge Cameron for top honors in the five-team field. The men weren’t as fortunate, with no runner finishing in the top 10 and going fourt...
RUIDOSO — Friday, the Portales football team was on the road against Ruidoso. Kind of ironic, because the Rams will be spending much of the postseason at home if they keep playing the way they did in Friday’s game. Portales may have taken the first major step toward a high playoff seed — which translates to more playoff football at Greyhound Stadium — by opening its District 3/4-4A schedule Friday with a 56-14 annihilation of host Ruidoso. It could mean home cooking for Por...
HOBBS — For now at least, the Hobbs boys soccer team has Clovis’ number. The Wildcats lost 3-0 at Hobbs on Saturday, enduring their second District 4-5A loss of the season, both of which came at the hands of the Eagles. Eight minutes in Saturday, Clovis was down 2-0. And the Wildcats could never get anything going offensively, dropping to 2-2-1 district, 15-2-1 overall as a result. Hobbs, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 district, 15-3 overall. “All in all we didn’t play too bad,” Clovis head coach Greg Trujillo said, “but our...
CLOVIS — The Clovis girls had a chance to wrap up the District 4-5A title Saturday with a win over Hobbs. The Eagles had other plans, and now the district title depends on Tuesday night. Hobbs’ 1-0 victory, coupled with Carlsbad’s 9-0 win Saturday over Roswell, puts the Wildcats, Eagles and Cavegirls all with a shot at the title. “Everything is going to hinge on what happens with Hobbs and Carlsbad,” Clovis coach Traci Sievers said. “That’s presuming we can beat Roswell (Tuesday). We have to show up.” The New Mexico Activiti...
ESPANOLA — Three sanctions have been imposed on the Valley High School football team after a brawl broke out between players in their Oct. 5 Homecoming matchup versus Bernalillo High School. The game was forfeited by the Sundevils with 6:23 remaining in the first quarter after the scuffle between the teams happened following a punt by Española on its second possession of the game with the Spartans, who held a 7-0 advantage at the time. The New Mexico Activities Association confirmed the forfeit Oct. 10 and that all players in...
HOBBS — In the race for New Mexico’s sixth racetrack and casino, the Economic Development Corporation of Lea County is rooting for Tucumcari. The New Mexico Racing Commission is weighing benefits of five applications for another “racinco” — one for Lordsburg, one for Tucumcari and three for Clovis. EDCLC President and CEO Steve Vierck said, “After much review, EDC’s position is that an additional racetrack and casino within southeast New Mexico would adversely impact our economy, tax revenues and the racing industry.” A...

PORTALES — With some shuffling from the general fund, the board of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility authority left its meeting Thursday having secured almost all of the funds needed to complete the interim pipeline between Cannon Air Force Base and Clovis, while also retiring some loans. Fixed Water 2, as the project is called, is due for construction by end of December or early January, according to ENMWUA Administrator Orlando Ortega. It will serve as an interim pipeline between north of Cannon and an EPCOR water s...
CLOVIS - Zoning regulations can be onerous and intimidating. And that's the reason Pete Wilt suspects no spectators attended Wednesday's town hall on a Unified Development Ordinance process covering them. Following the hourlong presentation by Kirk Bishop of Duncan and Associates, the city's building safety director said the process to overhaul the city's zoning labels and regulations should be a positive one for citizens. "It will be better for developers and just allow regul...

Eastern New Mexico’s newest landmark was nine stories and 105 feet tall. Promoters said it was the tallest building between Albuquerque and Dallas. It closed in 1984, but reopened in 2013 as a 59-unit apartment complex....
CLOVIS — The Clovis Fire Department has a larger ISO rating, and it should mean smaller insurance bills for many city and county residents. Fire Chief Mike Nolen announced during Thursday’s Clovis City Commission meeting that, effective Nov. 1, the CFD will be recognized as a Class 2 organization by the Insurance Services Office. Less than 2 percent of communities surveyed, Nolen said, reach Class 2 designation. Insurance providers that use ISO ratings when calculating premiums will likely reach lower premium costs for custom...
CLOVIS — The sight of someone walking down 14th Street, after dark, wearing a mask and carrying a softball bat could be cause for alarm. But this weekend, it was fun — just part of the 25th Annual Halloween Howwwl softball tournament that runs through this afternoon. Clovis Softball Association Tournament Coordinator Roger Jackson said 150 teams competed, including 25 who were trying to win games in addition to the tournament’s costume contest. Jackson said the Howwwl is CS...
