  • LaSage looks for improvement

    Freedom Newspapers

Eastern New Mexico University second-year cross country coach Greg LaSage knows that the Abilene Christians of the world are out of range in Saturday’s Lone Star Conference cross country meet, set for Portales Country Club. What he’s looking for is improvement over last year, when the Greyhounds finished eighth out of 10 men’s teams and the Zias were seventh of eight women’s squads in the league get-together. “We’re looking forward to it,” said LaSage, who also doubles as an assistant to ENMU baseball coach Phil Clabaugh...

  • A story of Courage

    Dave Wagner

Nigerian-born Courage Idemudia knows his first name must have a special meaning. He’s just not sure what it is. “I never asked my parents about it,” the Eastern New Mexico University junior said. “I just know I try to live up to it.” An outside linebacker, Idemudia moved from a village in his native land to the Dallas area nine years ago to live with an uncle. Just shy of his 13th birthday when he came to the United States, he said he learned English mainly by watching television and now speaks the language fluently....

  • Greyhounds not looking to take Lions lightly

    Dave Wagner

Texas A&M-Commerce is coming off a discouraging home loss to West Texas A&M, and at 1-6 is not having even close to the kind of season it envisioned. Still, Eastern New Mexico University coach Bud Elliott isn’t about to take the Lions lightly in Saturday’s 1 p.m. Lone Star Conference South Division clash at Blackwater Draw. “This’ll be a tough game, I don’t have any doubt about that,” said Elliott, whose team has lost two of its last three after a 4-0 start. “I told our players I don’t want anyone talking about (playoff) scen...

  • Lady Rams clinch top seed

    Kevin Wilson

Two down, one to go. For the Portales volleyball team, it’s not one season. It’s three. There is the pre-district schedule, the district season, and there’s the playoffs. The Lady Rams ended season one with a 6-10 record last week and ended season two on Thursday with a 25-22, 27-25, 25-21 sweep against District 4-3A rival Lovington at the PHS gym. Season three starts Nov. 1 as Portales (10-10, 4-0 in district) hosts the district championship at 7 p.m. and will be four wins away from the Class 3A state championship. “Four and...

  • Rams look to get into driver's seat

    Kevin Wilson

By virtue of a win at Greyhound Stadium last December, the Ruidoso Warriors are the defending Class 3A state champs in football. By virtue of a punishment from the New Mexico Activities Association, the Portales Rams are the best 2-5 team in the state. Neither circumstance matters at 7 p.m. today in Ruidoso, as the Rams and Warriors each look to get a head start in the race for District 4-3A supremacy. “I think a game like this is going to come back to mistakes,” Ruidoso coach Ridge Bowden said. “Whoever wins this ballgame wi...

  • ENMU's Pinckney adapts

Eastern New Mexico University junior Irshaun Pinckney, once talking about a career in engineering, decided to change his major to business and continue to play basketball for the Greyhounds. CNJ photo illustration by Eric Kluth PORTALES — Making adjustments is part of life and basketball. On the court, former Clovis High standout Irshaun Pinckney went from overpowering opponents in the paint to outsmarting them on the perimeter. Off the court, he’s changed his major but still values an education. Too small to play post at...
