CLOVIS — Thursday's snowfall means Clovis Municipal Schools will start on a two-hour delay Friday, according to a CMS news release. “District officials will be monitoring the weather throughout the night and early morning (Friday) and will evaluate conditions as they develop,” the release said. “Watch for updates — if conditions worsen or fail to improve, the decision to cancel school will be made by 7 a.m. Friday morning.” Various Thursday evening events for the district have either been canceled (tutoring) or postponed (... FARWELL — A former priest accused of sexual abuse of a minor was found not guilty by a Parmer County jury on Wednesday. The trial of Peter Mukekhe Wafula began last week in Farwell. Wafula, 40, served in Hereford, Friona and Bovina before he was removed from the ministry in 2018. He was indicted by a Parmer County grand jury in October 2018....
CLOVIS — City Commissioners on Tuesday voted 6-2 to draft a resolution that would raise local property taxes as a way to help fund the development of the interim groundwater project portion of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System. The levy to increase property taxes would actually go to funding city services like fire protection and drainage, freeing up gross-receipt tax funds that would then be put toward the project. Once the resolution is drafted, it will be brought before commissioners again before it can be a...

I love words. Perhaps I’ve not fallen into epeolatry yet, but it’s always fun and interesting to meet a new word. (Like epeolatry, which is the worship of words.) One of the best places I’ve found to discover new words and interesting things about words of all sorts is through the free e-mail publication “A.Word.A.Day” offered at www.wordsmith.org (since 1994). Last time I checked (which was years ago), their daily subscriber list was passing 600,000. I like that (even though...
The World Series began this week in Houston with the Astros hosting the Washington Nationals. That makes today a good day to look at eastern New Mexico ballplayers who appeared in the Fall Classic. This won’t be a long story. The Baseball Almanac reports 29 Major League Baseball Players have been born in New Mexico. That list includes Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who was born and grew up in Albuquerque. But only four MLB players have been born in eastern New Mexico, and only two — Cody Ross and Vern Stephens — appea...
My parents live in a cabin deep in the north woods. I know this sounds like the start of a fairytale. Sometimes it seems a bit like one. There are bear in the woods. Deer run in herds. The seasons are far more pronounced and extreme than those I am used to. After a day of glorious autumn sunshine on my bare arms, I woke in the middle of the night and saw, in the moonlight, that snow had covered the ground, turning the green grass white. “It won’t last,” my mother assured everyone within earshot. “There’s still a lot of nice f...
If one happened to be in the United States for a conference in Florida - an 8,000-mile journey from one's home in New Zealand, why on earth would one not consider a quick side trip to Portales? Happily, our friend Mandy Welch did just that last weekend, making a quick return visit to the community where she spent a year of her life as an international Rotary exchange student almost 40 years ago. "I've still got my Ram band jacket - I wore it for years," she reminisced,...

My introduction to “black humor” was a book called “Catch-22” by Joseph Heller. I fell in love with it and enjoy this guilt-inducing brand of humor even now, a half-century later. In “Catch-22,” set in World War II, the humor came from lines of reasoning like this: You could get out of combat if you were crazy, but you would be crazy not to want to avoid combat. So, if you tried to get out of combat by claiming you were crazy, you were sane, and back into battle you would go. Well, it was that and other dark, ironic wartime i...
How much do you respect and obey laws? How much should you? I suppose that depends on what you mean by “laws.” Most people confuse legislation for laws. Laws were discovered — usually thousands of years ago — while legislation is made up by politicians and imposed under threat of violence as if it were law. Occasionally, legislation is written to copy or reflect law, but not often. Law concerns respecting the rights of others, while legislation is almost entirely written...
President Trump can be expected to denounce the House’s impeachment inquiry as a “witch hunt” or a “coup” attempt no matter how fair and transparent the process is. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi still needs to shore up the credibility of the fast-moving investigation by having the entire House vote to authorize it and by insisting that witnesses now speaking to investigators in private testify as soon as possible in public. When Pelosi announced last month that the House was launching an “official” impeachment inquiry, this...
Walking into Sandia Elementary the other day, I was noticeably struck by how spotless and sparkling everything was. Not only is this clearly attributable to Sandia’s amazing custodians, but I learned more was going on. It’s not every day one gets called to a school to talk to a teacher who just wants to brag on a colleague and the impact that colleague’s been making. Gina Rubio, fourth-grade teacher at Sandia, contacted us to talk about the amazing recycling program they...
CLOVIS - You've probably heard of the Mexican holiday The Day of the Dead. But there might be more to it than what you've seen in movies or heard about through pop culture. The Day of the Dead is a three-day annual celebration from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 where families honor and remember their deceased relatives, while presenting prayers and offerings in their memory, often in the form of small skulls made from sugar. If you want to learn more, you can join 12-year-old Vita Flores...
