GRADY — The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. today at the Senior Citizen Center in Grady. Chairman and Clovis Mayor David Lansford said Wednesday that about 20 applicants have applied so far for the ENMWUA executive director position, vacated this month by new Clovis City Manager Justin Howalt. “We’re in the process of gathering all the applications and so (at today’s meeting) I think the process will begin in earnest in terms of the deliberations of the board members,” Lansford...
Portales native Logan White overcame some hardships early in life to be the man that he is today. White, 55, is the San Diego Padres’ director of pro scouting, and has more than 30 years in the major leagues, dating back to the mid-1980s as a minor league baseball player. After graduating from Portales High School in 1980, and then heading off to Western New Mexico University, White thought that he was on the fast track to being a MLB player. However, multiple injuries ended his career. After briefly returning home, White b...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico volleyball coach Sia Poyer admits senior server Alexis Aguirre was almost the one that got away. Thankfully, after a junior college stop along the way, Aguirre made her way to ENMU, and has been a focal point for the Hounds over the past three seasons. "She came in her junior year (of high school), and I had just gotten to Eastern around that time. Some people were talking about her, and of course I went and watched her. But at that time, we a...

Walking into La Casita Elementary to meet with Sylvia Martinez, principal, I waited as she finished wiping whipped cream off her face. She, along with some teachers, had just finished up their “Pie in the Face” competition, a great favorite with students. During the recent Hispanic Heritage month, La Casita students studied the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and did a range of activities, from academic to artistic to fun. Martinez shared, “Among our Spani...
A website called Quora allows users to ask questions and have them answered by their peers. Usually the questions are undergraduate queries like, “If Darth Vader were your father, how would you get away with staying out past midnight?” The other day, someone posed the question “What’s the difference between a liberal and a conservative?” That one is interesting. I didn’t see any of the responses, but that won’t stop me from coming up with one of my own. My first distinction is this: Liberals don’t mind if the government taps...
It’s easy to overlook treasures in our own backyard, and that often seems to be the case when it comes to the Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark. A surprising number of locals have never turned in at the gate six miles north of Portales, to venture down into the old Sam Sanders gravel pit and journey 13,000 years back in time. This weekend is a great time to discover … or rediscover … both the dig site and the Blackwater Draw Museum (reborn in May with fresh, inter...
CLOVIS — A Clovis man was sentenced this month to 16 years in prison for drug trafficking, according to a news release Wednesday from the 9th Judicial District attorney. Omar Millrans, 42, was convicted Aug. 22 of felony trafficking of controlled substances and dangerous drugs for sale, among other charges. Judge Drew Tatum sentenced Millrans on Oct. 16 to more than 30 years in the Department of Corrections, almost half of which was suspended for a total of 16 years in p...
On this date ... 1977: Twenty-three members of the Gattis Junior High marching band were probably still stiff and sore after having been treated and released from local hospitals the day before following an accident involving two school buses and a car. The students were returning from a band event in Canyon, Texas, when two of the four buses collided with each other and a car waiting to make a left-hand turn near the state line in Texico. Injured students were taken to...
CLOVIS — A recent report by the nonpartisan think tank Think New Mexico speaks highly of a number of local school districts and their ability to maximize spending in the classroom. The theory behind Think New Mexico’s Oct. 8 report “Improving Our Schools by Reallocating Dollars from Administration to the Classroom” is districts that spend money more efficiently by focusing inside the classroom rather than on administration costs produce higher graduation rates and test scores. The report pointed to Texico as being a model f...
PORTALES — Anyone who complains there's nothing to do at Portales High School isn't paying attention, administrators say. With two new extracurricular programs at the high school this year, students can better themselves alongside their peers, according to PHS Principal Mark Gormley. With the addition of a Business Professionals of America chapter at the school and the reinstitution of a student council, Gormley said students have the chance to "be leaders." "I think that's t...
PORTALES — Following a season where it made its first NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament, Eastern New Mexico University has been picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference. That’s according to the preseason poll, released Wednesday by the conference office in Richardson, Texas. The Greyhounds, who shared the league crown with Angelo State last season, received seven of the 31 first-place votes given by sports information directors, coaches and media representatives. On a video made for the LSC’s media d...
CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women’s soccer team pulled a tie from the jaws of defeat, and clinched itself a berth in the Lone Star Conference playoffs. Kenya Brooke scored the equalizer on an Ariel Lopez pass with 1:46 to play, and neither the visiting Greyhounds nor West Texas A&M scored in the two overtime periods of the 1-1 tie Wednesday night. It was a stunner for the Greyhounds (3-8-6, 2-5-4), who didn’t have a shot on goal until more than 70 minutes had passed. They trailed early in the second half,...

LSC men’s champ West Texas A&M swept the special awards, with Ryan Thompson as newcomer of the year, Briggs Wittlake freshman of the year and Jake Krolick coach of...
