Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2022

Clovis City Commission will soon vote on whether or not to adopt an ordinance that draws a line in the sand between the city and the state over abortion rights: The ordinance attempts to ban abortion clinics in Clovis. Laura Wight, a Clovis resident, heads up a social media group of individuals who believe health care decisions should be between patient and doctor. The group, Eastern New Mexico Rising, she said, is a non-partisan progressive group, a non-political group “focused on social justice issues.” The group opposes th...

  • Faith: Even good things end, and God knows when time has come

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 25, 2022

“When the time had fully come, God sent his Son” — Galatians 4:4 Ten words in English. Thirteen in Greek. Packed full of enough wonder to fill the universe. I’m baffled by even the first phrase, and that’s the easier part. A quick Internet search for “discerning the times” (it has a religious/biblical connotation) turned up a few good articles on plotting a wise course in our lives and culture. I should also report that the majority of articles the search brought up di...

  • WT deals Hounds fifth loss in row

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

PORTALES — The scoring struggles continued for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team on Saturday, but if nothing else the Greyhounds made rival West Texas A&M work for the win. Senior midfielder Kenny Brown found the back of the net in the 71st minute to break a scoreless tie, and the Buffaloes went on to a 2-0 Lone Star Conference victory at Greyhound Stadium. It was the fifth loss in a row for the Hounds (4-8-1, 1-6-0 LSC), all by shutout, since they edged then No. 8 Midwestern State 1-0 at home on Oct. 5 to e...

RICHARDSON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women were picked 10th while the men came in 15th in preseason Lone Star Conference basketball polls released on Monday by the league office. Seventeen LSC schools have basketball, with Dallas Baptist competing on the men’s side and Texas Woman’s on the women’s side only. While the polls reflect 1-through-16 finishes, the conference will actually have two eight-team divisions, with each squad playing home-and-home against division foes and once against each team on the ot...

  • Commentary: What? Actual defense at Tech?

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Oct 25, 2022

There are any number of examples to illustrate the gross ineptitude and coaching malpractice of the Texas Tech defense over the last dozen years. All speak to the horror show that was a Saturday staple. There were the six different defensive coordinators in seven years, lowlighted by Matt Wallerstedt’s midseason firing in 2014, canned because his off-the-field issues were somehow worse than his on-field issues. Mike Smith, his interim replacement, later accused Wallerstedt o...

  • Foxes rally, hand Buffs 34-24 loss

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

FORT SUMNER — Melrose’s fast start faded on Friday night and Fort Sumner rallied for a 34-24 victory in the deciding game of 8-man District 3 football. Fort Sumner (8-0, 4-0 district) earned the No. 2 seed on Sunday in the eight-team, 8-man playoffs, and will host Clayton in a quarterfinal game on Friday night. Meantime, the Buffaloes (6-4, 3-1) claimed the No. 3 seed and welcome sixth-seeded Logan at 6 p.m. on Friday. If both higher seeds win as expected, a rematch would take place in next week’s semifinals at Fort Sumne...

  • Cats, Rams set to play for district crowns

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

CLOVIS - That Portales High is playing for a district football championship this week isn't all that surprising, and the Rams haven't disappointed. For Clovis High, though, the Wildcats entered District 5-6A play winless in six games. But they've strung together three victories - two of them lopsided - heading into Friday's battle for the district title, and possibly a Class 6A playoff berth, at Los Lunas (5-4, 3-0). First-year Wildcats coach Andrew McCraw has a fairly simple...

  • Last Morgan family Realtor hanging up license

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Oct 25, 2022

For 86 years there has been at least one member of the Morgan family selling real estate in Portales, but come Monday, that will no longer be true. Hubert Morgan, Jr. — known to many as “Scoot” — holds the last family license and it expires at the end of the month. “I’m done,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it. I’m not tired of it. I just can’t keep up.” Morgan, who turned 80 in September, said he didn’t grow up intending to be a Realtor, but he’d been around it all of his life....

  • Opinion: Continued filming of 'Rust' disrespectful

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 25, 2022

I was disappointed to learn that filmmakers plan to resume production on “Rust,” and urge state regulators to keep a much closer eye on that set this time. I can’t imagine why anybody would want to see the film now, other than for morbid curiosity. Every time there is a scene where an actor pretends to get shot, viewers will know that a real person was shot and killed during filming. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot by the film’s star and producer, Alec Baldwin, who believed he was firing a prop gun loaded with bl...

  • Opinion: Swapping politicians pointless change

Kent McManigal, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

It might surprise you to learn this, but I don’t like change. Well, that’s not completely accurate: I don’t like pointless change. I have tolerated uncomfortable situations simply to avoid the pain of going through a change I couldn’t see as improving anything. However, if something is broken and I can see a solution, I want to change it. This is why I try to save people from their addiction to political government and all its various manifestations, such as police, taxatio...

  • Governor announces request for land conservation feedback

Kathleen Stinson, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

Earlier this month, the New Mexico 30 by 30 Committee, an advisory group that is working on Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s 2021 executive order to conserve New Mexico lands, announced a request for public feedback on definitions of conserved lands. The goal is to conserve 30 percent of all lands in New Mexico by 2030, with an additional 20 percent of lands designated as climate stabilization areas, as stated on the www.emnrd.nm.gov website. “These definitions are important because they will help with baseline ass...

  • Portales man pleads guilty

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

PORTALES — A Portales man, in an agreement in federal court, has pleaded guilty to production of child pornography. Augustin Gallegos, 37, faces 18 to 23 years in prison when he is sentenced in January, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico Alexander M.M. Uballez. Gallegos must also register as a sex offender. Court records show from about March 2018 to May 2019 Gallegos “knowingly persuaded, induced, enticed and coerced a child, identified as Jane Doe, approximately nine years old,” to...

  • Opinion: Chancellor search at ENMU remains loaded with secrets

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

It’s been 30 months since Jeff Elwell officially and mysteriously resigned as chancellor at Eastern New Mexico University. The search for his long-term successor has been just as mysterious with allegations of impropriety coming from a regent early in the process. And last week it became stranger still. Five “finalists” for the job were selected by a search committee, but taxpayers still don’t know who they are. Secret keeping at ENMU in 1988 helped lead to a new state law requiring colleges be more transparent in hiring...

  • Business booming in border towns

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

The border towns of Texico and Farwell are seeing new businesses built and proposed, based partly on laws that went into effect this year that make once-forbidden consumable products legal for sale and use. In May, voters in Farwell approved alcoholic beverage sales inside city limits. Since then, four businesses have obtained liquor sales licenses from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for sites in Parmer County: Lowe's grocery, Allsup's convenience store, Annie and...

  • Plenty of area Halloween events leading up to Oct. 31

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 25, 2022

Halloween, Oct 31, is on a Monday this year. A check with local authorities such as Clovis Police Chief Roy Rice indicates it’s understood Monday night is the night for trick-or-treating. Friday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce is inviting people to join them in downtown Portales for what they are calling “safe trick-or-treating” with businesses getting together for the event. Saturday at the Curry County Event...
