Lubbock legend Mac Davis was remembered by family and friends during a monument dedication last week at the city of Lubbock Cemetery. Davis was a Lubbock native who made a national name for himself as a star of music, stage and screen, writing songs performed by the likes of Elvis Presley - including "In the Ghetto" and "A Little Less Conversation" - and performing a number of his own hits including "Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me." His entertainment career lasted more than 50...

  • Faith: Father always ready to listen - no phone required

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 26, 2021

I’ve just had another cell phone stolen. It’s not really a big deal; it happens at least once a day. I think the thief who keeps stealing it is one guy working alone. I have no idea why he is so persistent and why he bears me such ill will. To be accurate, the miscreant is not actually a thief; he’s more of a prankster. Yes, he does take my cell phone, but he just hides it, moves it, buries it, and seems to take pleasure in wasting my time and driving me nuts as I try to fi...

    Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 26, 2021

LUBBOCK — With Matt Wells' dismissal Monday midway through his third season at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders are back in the market for their fourth football coach in the past decade. Since Tech fired Mike Leach in December 2009, Tommy Tuberville, Kliff Kingsbury and Wells have been unable to restore the program's winning ways. Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt has enlisted four men to assist in the upcoming search: deputy AD Tony Hernandez, Tech Regents and donors Dusty Womble and Cody Campbell and former Tech and NFL r...

  • Report: Student slashes at another with pocket knife

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2021

A student at House Municipal Schools talked about shooting up the school and slashed at another student with a pocket knife but did not injure him, according to an incident report filed with the Quay County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Russell Shafer said Monday that student was not arrested, but that the case would be referred to juvenile probation officials. It wasn’t clear whether the student was disciplined or still enrolled at the school. Attempts to reach House Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot for comment were uns...

  • Steers, Mustangs seek district titles

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2021

BOVINA - All is quiet on the New Mexico area small-school football front this weekend. Clovis Christian and Elida were ousted in the first round of the 6-man playoffs last week, while Texico and Melrose have first-round byes in Class 2A and 8-man, respectively. It's not so quiet on the Texas side, however, with all three teams engaging in meaningful contests. Farwell visits Panhandle with the District 1-2A Division I title on the line, while Bovina hosts New Home in its regula...

  • Lady Cats earn spot in Class 5A soccer playoffs

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2021

CLOVIS — Clovis High’s girls were accorded the No. 10 seed by the New Mexico Activities Association on Sunday in Class 5A state soccer playoffs, and the Lady Wildcats (13-4-1) faced a first-round date on Tuesday at No. 7 Volcano Vista (11-5-1). The winner of that matchup advances to quarterfinal play against second-seeded Carlsbad (18-2), ostensibly at Carlsbad, on Saturday. The Lady Cats handed the Cavegirls their only loss of the season (2-1 in double overtime at Leon Williams Stadium on Sept. 28) before Carlsbad dro...

  • Cats, Rams have work remaining

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Oct 26, 2021

CLOVIS — It’s conceivable that either Clovis High or Portales High, or both, could still make it to postseason play. But the Wildcats and Rams have work to do, and almost surely will need to pull off road upsets in regular-season finales this week to have a realistic chance. CHS (3-5, 3-2 Class 6A District 2/5), which saw its three-game winning streak end in a 41-14 loss to Sandia on Friday night at Leon Williams Stadium, plays a 7 p.m. game on Thursday against Eldorado (6-3, 3-1) at Albuquerque’s Milne Stadium. Meant...

  • Rough 10-minute stretch does in Hounds

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2021

ODESSA, Texas — Texas-Permian Basin has probably been the surprise team this season in Lone Star Conference football. The Falcons, in just the seventh year of their program, kept themselves in contention for at least a possible share of the LSC title Saturday night, outscoring Eastern New Mexico University 28-0 over a 10-minute stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters to notch a 44-21 victory. Junior quarterback Clayton Roberts threw for 295 and three touchdowns, two to junior wide receiver M.J. Link, as the Falcons (...

  • Dear diary: 83 years of storytelling

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Oct 26, 2021

I have lost track of the number of times I've started journals or resolved to keep a diary - if nothing else, at least a bare-bones occasional record of events and important dates. After a week or two - at best a few months - it gets set aside and forgotten. In conversations with others, I find this is a common human experience. That makes the story I am going to tell you even more remarkable. At the age of 94, Jean Grissom is making entries in her 17th five-year diary. I'll...

  • Opinion: Being productive noble thing to do

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 26, 2021

Since this pandemic has upset the economic applecart and challenged the actual value of work, maybe we should consider some radical new ideas about how to compensate people. So, after being influenced by a week of workaday pleasures with a granddaughter, whose eyes are just beginning to see the magnificence of life on earth — let’s make up a utopia, where everyone lives off the generosity of each other. Instead of stimulus checks, let’s give out gratuity checks, the catch being we can only spend them on tips and bonus...

  • Opinion: Vaccine mandate interferes with employers' decisions

The Detroit News, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 26, 2021

Weeks after President Joe Biden announced his decree that roughly 80 million workers would need to get the COVID-19 vaccine or weekly testing, many details of that order are still unknown. Business groups are rightly pushing back against an undefined, invasive mandate that could exacerbate an already tight labor market. After months of being told what they could and couldn’t do by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan companies are seeking to normalize their operations and tackle the workforce shortages so many employers are facing...

  • Opinion: Education must be separate from state

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Oct 26, 2021

I am a fan of education. If there were such a thing as public education, I’d be a supporter. Unfortunately, what exists instead is “public schooling.". By “public,” they mean government controlled, and by “schooling” they mean indoctrination. Schooling is not the same as education, but its opposite. I oppose socialist, tax-funded government indoctrination and the compulsory day-prisons for children where it occurs. It’s no wonder socialist and Marxist ideas sneak in to t...

  • Las Cruces High band truck, equipment stolen

    Las Cruces Sun-News, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 26, 2021

LAS CRUCES — The Las Cruces High School Showcase Band’s day competing in the Zia Marching Band Fiesta on Saturday started on an extremely sour note. Band officials awoke in the morning to find someone stole a Penske box truck holding more than $200,000 of equipment, instruments and speakers from a hotel parking lot in Albuquerque ahead of the performance. “As soon as we heard the news, everything froze and our hearts dropped,” said Lorraine Leachman, LCHS Showcase Band fundraising chair, in a news release. But thanks to the a...

ALBUQUERQUE — Election workers and officials in Curry and Roosevelt counties have been spared the kind of threats that have plagued their colleagues nationwide, leading to a federal pledge to investigate and prosecute such threats, according to both county clerks. “It has not been a big concern” in Roosevelt County, Mandi Park, the Roosevelt County Clerk, said on Friday. There have been no threats to poll workers or any elected officials, she added, but she said she was aware that such threats have occurred in the state...

  • Band wins Zia contest

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Oct 26, 2021

Be it the COVID-19 pandemic, a strong challenge from Organ Mountain or just generally a target on their backs, nothing seems to beat the Clovis High marching band. The band won the Zia Marching Fiesta for the ninth consecutive time Saturday, edging Organ Mountain 88.55 to 88.4 in the final round. After losing the 2020 competition season to the pandemic, Clovis came back with its baseball-themed "Home Run" show and took the title, along with outstanding musical effect and outst...

  • EPA to make PFAS rule changes

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 26, 2021

SANTA FE — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will move forward with a nationally significant rule to change how per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are managed and cleaned up under federal law, according to a release from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office. The EPA sent a response letter Tuesday to a June petition from the governor, detailing its intention to list several PFAS chemicals as hazardous constituents under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The letter was included in the...
