  • God's love always present

    Joan Clayton

I watched the nurse who had much compassion. She had work to do as she completed her charts, writing with a pen. Yet she had time to hold an elderly man’s hand with her other hand. As she wrote her reports for a weary day, she never left his hand. The man held her hand against his face and smiled. I like to think he gave a kiss toward God. Another couple was seated for lunch. The husband lovingly encouraged his wife to eat. The gentleman didn’t have to tell me they had 58 years of marriage. I saw it in his eyes. His dev...

  • My turn: Local communities acknowledge veterans' service with ceremonies

    Alisa Boswell

I have to say it made me proud to see how much acknowledgment our local communities and newspapers gave Veterans Day this year. It was significant to me to write the Veterans Day cover story for the Clovis and Portales papers, because my father was in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and my big brother is currently a Marine. The significance of the military never really sunk in when I was a child and it was part of my every day life. After being out of the military lifestyle for several years, it was visiting my brother this...

  • Chandlers tapped to help with Martinez transition

Freedom New Mexico Father and son Caleb and Matt Chandler of Clovis have both been named to search committees for Governor-Elect Susana Martinez, according to releases from Martinez. Matt Chandler, the current 9th Judicial District Attorney, is one of five selected for the public safety and homeland security and emergency management search committee. He ran an unsuccessful bid against Gary King for the office of attorney general. Caleb Chandler, a former Clovis police chief and current Curry County commissioner, was one of... Full story

Matt Chandler, the current 9th Judicial District Attorney, is one of five selected for a transition committee charged with finding candidates for state public safety director and director of homeland security. • Game warden got dose of humility

Glenda Price One summer we managed a guest ranch in the New Mexico mountains. Besides taking reservations, cleaning cabins and doing laundry, we had a string of dude horses. We took care of the horses and accompanied guests on trail rides in the nearby forest. We had one other duty —trash. The cabins were built around a square, and the middle space had firewood for the fireplaces, children’s swings — and trash cans. Those were the days before bear-proof trash receptacles, and most of our guests LOVED w...

  • Give people power to govern selves

    Tibor Machan

I have been writing in favor of gridlocks for some time, at least as a second-best option to the one where the government is in the hands of an administration committed to limited powers. I wasn’t thrilled with the outcome last week that sent Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer, among others, back to the nation’s capitol to try to continue to shore up the government’s powers. But at least the election had the favorable result of producing a gridlocked regime for a while. I say, let them be bogged own in their partisan bicke...

  • Government doesn’t need to act as parents

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments last week in Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants, which will decide whether California’s blanket ban on people under age 18 being allowed to purchase certain violent video games will stand. The justices seemed sympathetic to the idea that there should be some way to shield minors from violent games in which the player has the option of “killing, maiming, dismembering or sexually assaulting an image of a human being,” as the 2005 statute put it. But most of the justices’ questio...

  • Expect same from GOP congress

Eastern New Mexico residents who fear the Republican takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives will mean a loss of benefits probably needn’t worry. Despite all the rhetoric to that effect, the Grand Old Party traditionally has shown a grand old habit for maintaining and even expanding services — and debt — as have the Democrats, who kept control of the Senate. Both parties, after all, show the same penchant of buying Americans’ votes with favors paid with the voters’ own money. We need only look back at the G...

  • Their view: Senator thanks New Mexico veterans

U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., issued the following statement in honor of our nation’s veterans: Each Veterans Day is a solemn occasion when we, as a nation, reflect and show gratitude to those who have served or are currently serving in our military and the families who support them. I’d especially like to thank New Mexico’s veterans for their commitment to protect our country and its interests. New Mexico has a long and proud history of military service, and we are honored to have many living testaments to American brave...

  • Woman’s spiritual journey an inspiration

    Judy Brandon

Judy Brandon: Religion columnist My sister Susie sent me this e-mail last Sunday. It is worth reading in the original form and I can add nothing to it. She gave me her permission to share it with you. Dear Judy, Today I heard one of the most inspirational women I have ever encountered. When I saw this woman walk into the room, I was taken back. It was apparent that “Jane” was a fan of tattoos. When it was announced that Jane would be giving her faith story, I knew her past wou...

  • Area veterans honored

    Argen Duncan

“O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!” With those words from “America, the Beautiful” and many other statements, participants in the 64th annual American Legion Veterans Day service honored veterans and current service members as the heroes in the song. The event included Don Paschke’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the 47th year, Joe Blair’s recognition of prisoners of war and people missing in action, and a proclamation by Mayor Sh... Full story

  • Military mama: Veterans Day for all heroes

There's something about a man in uniform; there’s an undeniable, strength and responsibility of donning the gear of the armed forces. It isn’t simply about an attraction to a certain type of person, there is a lot of implied valor whether you see a no striper or a highly decorated zebra-arm. There is a great deal of honor that comes with experience, but even the youngest of airmen have signed on for the greatest challenge of their lives — for me, for us, for our country. And ladies, I am so privileged to know so man...
