the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 2, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. — Like their female counterparts, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team got a rough baptism into the 2021-22 season on Monday night, falling to Arizona 96-50 in the team’s only preseason exhibition contest. ENMU’s women ventured into Tucson last Thursday and were handed an 84-25 setback by the homestanding Wildcats. In Monday’s tilt, the Hounds took a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by junior guard JaQuan Morris, but Arizona ripped off the next six points, then went on a 7-0 tear to open a 13...

  • ENMU extends streak, earns two LSC awards

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 2, 2021

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team continued its late-season roll on Saturday, so much so that the Greyhounds are now in strong position to qualify for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament later this month. Mired near the basement of the 18-team circuit only a few weeks ago, ENMU (6-15, 6-7 LSC) extended its winning steak to five — the program’s longest since a six-match run in 2016 — with a tight 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at Greyhound Arena. With the...

  • Angelo State spanks ENMU

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Nov 2, 2021

PORTALES - Tye Hiatt figured his first season as Eastern New Mexico University's football coach would be a little rough, especially considering the Greyhounds hadn't played since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Until Saturday, though, he said he thought his team had generally put its best foot forward. Playing their final home game of the season, the Hounds couldn't overcome a three-touchdown blitz by Angelo State - on just four plays - early in the second stanza and wen...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Nov 2, 2021

MELROSE — Melrose and Fort Sumner know each other pretty well when the teams meet in football. The longtime rivals collide on Friday night in an 8-man semifinal playoff game, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Top-seeded Tatum (8-1) hosts No. 4 Logan (7-3) in the other matchup. It’s an all-District 2 field remaining after Logan knocked out District 1’s lone rep, Magdalena, 24-18 last week. Fort Sumner (7-2) beat district foe Mesilla Valley 54-14 in the other first-round tilt. “This is going to be one of those games where we both kn...

  • Opinion: Good, bad exist in all facets of US

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 2, 2021

The divisions in our nation mostly lie along urban and rural lines. Why is that? Recently I spent a week in Memphis. It’s famous for Beale Street and the Blues, Elvis’s Graceland and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, but as is the case with any famous city, it’s so much more than what it’s known for. The Greater Memphis area population is about 1.3 million, but the latest Census count puts it at 633,104 inside the city limits. It should be no surprise that, in 2020, Biden won big there, carrying all of Shelby County...

  • Opinion: Banning books will only raise interest in them

Dallas Morning News, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 2, 2021

We’d like to thank Texas Republican state Rep. Matt Krause of Fort Worth for launching an inquiry into the books lining the shelves of public schools across Texas. No, really. Thank you. Sometimes we forget what it’s like to be a kid, driven by a bubbling curiosity and that indomitable impulse to do the opposite of what adults say. What more ingenious way to persuade students to read than to type up a 16-page list of books and tell schools that those titles are being investigated? It’s a clever move. We expect hundreds if no...

  • Opinion: Supply chain is government problem

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Nov 2, 2021

I hate to sound like a parrot repeating the only phrase he knows until everyone is sick of hearing him. Even though it’s true. Squawk! Government is the problem. If you’ve seen any news or visited a store recently, you may have noticed the supply chain seems to be broken. Almost every retailer is having trouble getting products, and many of them are telling customers to start trying to get what they want early. They are warning customers that the things they want may sim...

  • Fun-filled Halloween at Arts Academy

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Local columnist|Updated Nov 2, 2021

On Friday, there were pumpkins, jack-O’-Lanterns, corn shucks, costumes, candy, cupcakes, and much more abounding across the district, celebrating Halloween since it fell on the weekend this year. Walking into the Arts Academy at Bella Vista, I found myself almost immediately at the end of the line of Ruth Bridgwater’s second-grade class, making their way to the library. These little ones insisted I join them in their “Tour of the Spooky Library.” Librarian Jamie Petty, all dr...

  • Project aims to restore veterans' gravesites

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Blame it on some hot summer days. Blame it on COVID. Blame it on the fact that, as Nancy Dunson said, her husband Randy "didn't have a project at the time, and he needs a project." Blame it on whomever you like, but if you're able-bodied and own a few common tools, then please consider showing up at the Portales Cemetery at 9 a.m. Saturday. That "project" I mentioned is a big one, and many hands are needed. The Dunsons live about a mile and a half from the Portales Cemetery. I...
