  • Armorer alleges sabotage on 'Rust' set

Victoria Traxler The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 4, 2021

Two New Mexico attorneys representing Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer working on the Rust film set, appeared on NBC's Today show Wednesday morning to share their theory that the fatal shooting Oct. 21 at Bonanza Creek Ranch was the result of sabotage. Jason Bowles said Gutierrez-Reed loaded the gun with rounds she had grabbed from an ammunition box labeled "dummy." He proposed a live round — or several live rounds — may have been placed in the box. "We're assuming somebody put the live round in that box," Bowles said. He...

When Angel Anaya was a youngster, his parents purchased a family vehicle – a practical Dodge Durango. As he grew up, Angel came to appreciate the ride with all of its "gadgets and gizmos." "As I grew up I fell in love with the car," he said. His plan as a young teen was to "drive that car to school and show all my friends my sweet ride." His parents ultimately gave him the vehicle, and he drove it to Clovis High School as soon as he received his driver's license. But his f...

  • Faith: Reflecting a little bit on gratitude these days

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Walking into November, I have been reflecting on gratitude. I give myself a gratitude tuneup a couple of times a year. This year, I’m finding that gratitude is much easier when things are going well, and not so much when things are hard. We’re in a hard spot right now. Bandit, the senior Grande Dame of Head Acres, has an aggressive form of cancer. Her vet says she has a month, maybe two, to live. Tough pill to swallow. Bandit has been my constant shadow for the 12-plus yea...

  • Lady Rockets post third win over PHS

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 2, 2021

ROSWELL — Portales High’s volleyball team hasn’t been able to beat Roswell Goddard yet in three meetings this season, but first-year coach Jacki Bailey thinks the Lady Rams are getting closer. PHS earned its first set win against Goddard on Saturday, but in the end the Lady Rockets were too much in posting a hard-fought 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 District 4-4A victory. Goddard (17-4, 3-1 district) had to work hard to nail down the win. “We’ve been better each time we’ve played them,” Bailey said. “We know we’re capable o...

  • Faith: Best to keep some things between yourself and God

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 2, 2021

I’m about to send $20 as a donation to my granddaughter’s volleyball team. I just thought you’d want to know. I don’t know why you’d want to know, but evidently people are interested in these kinds of things. Just so you’ll know, I am also wearing sandals as I am writing this (at home) rather than my other footwear alternatives. Don’t worry. I’ll let you know the moment I change shoes later, lest you be left wondering. Are you thinking that I’ve had some sort of brain ble...
