  • Reader reaction — Nov. 6

We asked our Facebook followers: “A Clovis mother and son are scheduled in court, on separate dockets, on charges of an incestuous relationship. (Editor’s note: Both trials have since been moved to next year.) Since the relationship didn’t start until they were consenting adults, do you think this is a case the judicial system needs to pursue?” • Candace Marin: Incest is incest and that is just nasty. Guilty. We do not need no incest babies running around. • Tim Garcia: They didn’t kill anybody, and they weren’t selling drugs... Full story

  • Disc golfers brave weather for tourney

    Kevin Wilson

Staff photo: Kevin Wilson Jonathan Pena of Clovis takes a shot during the Tex-Mex Tossup disc golf tournament Saturday at Ned Houk Park. Managing Editor [email protected] By most accounts, cold and rainy conditions made Saturday a miserable day to be outside — particularly at a wide-open city park. But a few dozen people braving the elements at Ned Houk Park would tell you a bad day throwing a disc is better than a good day doing almost anything else. Friendly c...

  • Wilson: Taking last chance to say go vote

    Kevin Wilson

There was a time when I never thought I’d say this, but this is the last time I’m penning a column before the 2016 election. I have thoughts on what will happen based on the data, but Tuesday is about the people. Some things will surprise me, but I don’t think anything’s off the table. But as sure as I am about the voters deciding on Tuesday, I don’t know if they’ll get their say. Tuesday will mark 269 days since Justice Antonin Scalia died. It will also mark 237 days since...

  • Sloan: I could pull off being president

Whether it’s Clinton’s email server, Trump’s huge hands, Johnson’s Alpo/Aleppo brain-freeze or Stein’s chug-a-mug name, voters seem disgruntled with Tuesday’s choices. With strictly altruistic motives — like getting out of Portales — I offer myself as a write-in alternative. Wendel Sloan Win or lose, I promise not to call my opponents’ supporters “stupid” unless they post memes of me grabbing kittens. (I also won’t call them “clowns” unless they are scaring people.) Let’s...

  • MVD on right track with its mobile service

New Mexico is the fifth-largest state in the nation when it comes to land mass. Yet its population of just over 2 million is spread out over those nearly 122,000 square miles, making providing services a physical, and fiscal, challenge. The internet is an economical option in many cases. So are mobile offices. And now the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division has both. MVD has allowed many drivers and vehicle owners to do business online for years: everything from renewing registrations, licenses and parking placards, to paying c...

  • Boswell: Classic films still entertaining

    Alisa Boswell

Posting a very young picture of Frances Bavier on Facebook spurred a lot of old movie discussion and some further investigating on my part. For those of you who don’t know, Frances Bavier played Aunt Bea on “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s; it was one of my favorite shows growing up and still is, along with the “Dick Van Dyke Show.” I don’t really remember why I looked up “The Andy Griffith Show” on Google the other day, but when I did, I clicked on Frances Bavier...

  • America divided

Tribune News Service KENANSVILLE, N.C. — America is a nation in a clash of eras. One America is straining to burst fully into the 21st century, impatient for change and dreaming of a world where immigrants of any stripe are welcomed, and diversity of religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation and even gender identity is embraced. The other is straining to hold on to favored parts of the 20th century, yearning to maintain what’s worked for them for so long: a familiar health care system, law and order, streets clear of imm... Full story
