  • Judges cannot be political pawns

    Christine Flowers, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

When I was a teenager, my father belonged to Philadelphia’s Union League. Back then, in the late 1970s, women were excluded from the membership rolls. I also remember that the female guests who dined with their male friends were politely asked to use the entrance on Sansom Street. It was a delicate way of showing that they were welcome to visit, but not to stay. Unfortunately, I’ve been to see signs recently that it’s women handing out membership cards to the Old Boys Club....

  • CYFD must stop skirting transparency laws

    Walt Rubel, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

In 2021, two employees of the state’s Children, Youth and Families Department revealed it was using a secure text messaging app that automatically deleted all of their messages, in clear violation of the state’s public records law. Then-CYFD Secretary Brian Blalock responded by firing the employees, Clifford and Debra Gilmore, while defending the app as being necessary to protect the privacy of children in the CYFD system. Since then, the state has paid a $650,000 settlement to the Gilmores for damages and back pay, Bla...

  • Governor still has political life

    Tom McDonald, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

Maybe I wrote Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s political obituary too soon. Not so long ago, after the governor issued a public health order restricting the carry and concealment of guns in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, a firestorm of protests broke out statewide. Some Second Amendment proponents defiantly brandished their firearms in public protests over her order, and even some of her fellow Democrats said she was overreaching her constitutional authority. It made national news and Lujan Grisham was widely criticized. I...

  • Numerous unknowns before us

    Rube Render, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

Some years ago, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld wrote that there were known/knowns, known/unknowns and unknown/unknowns. Think about it. That’s things we know, things we know that we don’t know and things we don’t know we don’t know. It’s that last one that will put you in really deep kimchi. Jake Sullivan’s “Foreign Affairs” article prepared prior to Oct. 7, noting that the Middle East was quieter than it had been in two decades, is a classic example of unknown unknown...

  • Don't be confused: Government has no rights

    Kent McManigal, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

When government clearly goes too far, someone may ask whether or not government has the right to do what it did. The honest answer is always “no.” Government has no rights. It's not that government has no extra rights; government has no rights of any kind. Individuals who work for government have rights. They have the same rights anyone else has. Rights equal and identical to the rights everyone else enjoys, but no more. These individuals don't magically get extra rights made...

  • Time to address China supremacy of vital minerals

    Jim Constantopoulos, Correspondent|Updated Nov 4, 2023

At the close of World War II, the United States revealed one of the secrets to the Allied success. It was the discovery in 1942 of a large tungsten deposit in the hills outside of Yellow Pine, Idaho. Tungsten is a rare mineral used to harden artillery shells. With those shells, enemy armored vehicles and tanks were blown up. Tungsten was also used to harden bullets, and its discovery in Yellow Pine was credited with having shortened the war by at least one year and saved the lives of a million American soldiers. Gen. Dwight...
