Three people found dead in a Clovis motel parking lot were likely victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, police said Tuesday. Police immediately said they did not suspect foul play. Inspection of the vehicle, described in police records as a black Chrysler, showed its “exhaust pipe was broken in half … it lo... Full story

Matt Weiner, the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Outsiders of college basketball's insulated world may hear about Daven Võ's current gig – first-year head coach of Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball – and wonder: Why is this your dream job? During recruiting season, he trades warm dinners with his wife, Laura, and three kids, for sprawling rural highways filled with unfamiliar faces for players who may commit elsewhere. What's more, his dream job takes place in Portales; a close knit, but isolated town wher...

Officials said the man tied a rope around his neck, fastened the other end to the steering wheel of his car, and jumped out of the car while it was in motion. Investigators estimated the car traveled 200 yards after the man’s body hit the ground; it was found stalled in a field. 1956: Officials at Clovis Air Force Base were asking residents to avoid trespassing on the Melrose Gunnery Range. • Rain/snow mix headed for region

    Staff and wire reports|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Let it rain and snow, New Mexico. The beginning of November brought a dramatic change from the unusual heat October had to offer. Storm systems in New Mexico will bring anywhere from small bursts of snow in certain parts of the state to several inches of snow in other places. In eastern New Mexico, freezing temperatures are expected this week with snow/rain mixes starting tonight and lasting through Friday. Cooler temperatures are expected to remain next week as well, but moisture is less likely after Friday. The region has a...

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Sul Ross (3-6, 2-5 LSC) leads the all-time series 14-11-1, but had lost eight in a row before Saturda...

  • Mustangs turn back Hounds 2-1

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2024

For a while this season, it looked like the Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team was in good shape to make it to the six-team Lone Star Conference postseason tournament, but those hopes have taken a big hit of late. On Saturday, the Greyhounds played well against second-place Midwestern State, but the Mustangs rallied for a 2-1 victory at Steve Loy Stadium that left ENMU very much on the outside looking in. With the loss, the Hounds fell to 4-6-6 (2-4-3 LSC). They...

  • Behavior health center takes a 'lot of work'

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Across New Mexico, crisis triage centers are having a moment. Santa Fe has one, based at Santa Fe County’s La Sala Center. Gallup is line for one, a new center operated by the Santa Fe Recovery Center that’s scheduled to open its doors in less than a week. Bernalillo and Sandoval counties are soon to have one, too, a facility state leaders say will be run by the University of New Mexico. Clovis, working hand in hand with about a half-dozen other communities, wants a crisis triage center as well. City leaders put out a cal...

  • Faith: Take a Paul-like attitude for a win-win outcome in God

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Word salad, here we come. Miniskirt. Degradable. Scuzzy. Prefaded. Lite. Porn. Salsa. Nucleosome. Cockamamie. Turista. Gigawatt. Interrobang. Bioweapon. And some two-word entries. Zip code. Fender bender. Tumble dry. Satellite dish. Launch window. Road rash. Log on. And let’s not forget some hyphenated contenders. Artsy-fartsy. Three-pointer. Get-go. T-ball. One-liner. Mixed-media. Coffee-table. Anti-seizure. My question: What do all of these words or combination-words have i...

  • Opinion: Public figures: Stop cheapening Veterans Day

    Danny Tyree, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 5, 2024

If you designed a banner declaring, “The world is full of crazies” and ran it up the flagpole, assuredly, I would salute it. On the other hand, as Veterans Day approaches, I realize the world is also full of opportunists – opportunists who devalue the dangers faced by the nation’s military personnel. We’ve all witnessed it with increasing frequency: some office-holder, bureaucrat or celebrity (a) gets pushback for a totally outrageous statement or (b) finally gets busted engaging in some flavor of financial...

  • Opinion: Global warming may cost trillions of dollars

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 5, 2024

When we think about the economic damage of climate change, most of us probably think about the physical destruction wrought by mammoth disasters like hurricanes, wildfires and droughts: Bungalows tumbling into the sea. Houses turned to ash. Acres of dead crops. That sort of thing. But the quieter, longer-term effects of global warming cut even deeper. Consider western North Carolina. It’s just beginning to repair the heavy physical damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure caused by Hurricane Helene nearly a month a...

  • Opinion: Coming generations better in many ways

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 5, 2024

When I was young, I didn’t know how good I had it. My family wasn’t rich, but we had enough. My parents loved their children unconditionally, taught us the value of service and gave us all a foundation for lives well lived. Moreover, I grew up with a hero in the house — my father. He wasn’t a war hero, a great athlete or television star. Instead, he was a good and decent man who made sure our home was filled with love and laughter, and I never stopped looking up to him as an example of how someone should live their life. W...

  • Pipeline campaign 'educating' or 'negative?'

Grant McGee, the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2024

Some said Monday's meeting of the Ute Water Commission was contentious. Others called it a good discussion. A continuing "negative" advertising campaign by the village of Logan regarding the Ute Reservoir and the Ute Water Project was called into question by Commission Chair Mike Morris, highlighting the meeting at the Clovis-Carver Public Library's North Annex. "Would the village of Logan like to respond to their spending of public money to oppose the Ute Water Project?"...

  • Never owned a house in Atlanta - nor was my name Monty

Grant McGee, the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2024

I’ve changed the names in this story so I don’t get hassled by the guy who used to have my phone number. I’ve been getting phone calls from people in Georgia who want to know if I want to sell my house in Atlanta. I don’t have a house in Atlanta. But a guy named Monty apparently has a house in Atlanta. From what I can gather, Monty is from Georgia and once had a gig out west here with Uncle Sam’s Air Force or some civilian gig at Cannon Air Force Base. I first discovered this years ago when telemarketers from car dealershi...
