The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 10, 2018

PORTALES — It wasn’t easy, but the Portales Rams are moving on in the District 4-4A volleyball tournament. Taylee Rippee had 14 kills to lead three Rams in double figures, and Portales (8-13) extended its season Tuesday with a 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-10 victory at the Ram Athletic Center. Portales now heads to Artesia Thursday for a 6 p.m. district semifinal. That match’s winner heads to Goddard to Saturday’s district championship. Lovington’s season ends at 7-14, but...

  • Clovis volleyball team reaches district semifinal

    Peter Stein|Updated Nov 9, 2018

CLOVIS — A glance at the overall score — a sweep for Clovis High's volleyball team over Carlsbad — might make it seem that the Lady Wildcats had an easy time of beating the Cavegirls in Tuesday's District 4-5A opening-round match at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Not quite. Yes, Clovis did win 3-0 and advanced to play at Hobbs in the district semifinals Thursday night. But the Lady 'Cats had to rally in each of the first two sets before finding their rhythm, taking control. Clovi...

  • Opinion: Education foundation hits 10-year anniversary

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2018

Our Clovis Municipal Schools Education Foundation is now in its 10th year. Initiated through the efforts of then-superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm, the foundation has flourished over the years. While members have come and gone and committee memberships have shifted, the underlying commonality is a unified belief in loyalty to and support of our school district by those who are a part of it, directly or indirectly. Our foundation funds a wide range of things: teacher grants;...

  • Faith: God best defense against spiritual rodents

    Curtis Shelburne, Columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2018

I like to think of our back yard as a mostly safe, peaceful, and appealing place. Until recently, it was. Oh, there were years when a good-natured Great Dane lived there. It was safe. He was peaceful. But “nice yard” and “Great Dane” do not coexist in the same universe. He was a good dog, but his relocation was an incredible blessing for that piece of real estate. When he moved on, we undertook a serious improvement project, and that part of the estate became vastly better,...

  • Faith: What can just one person do? Love

    Patti Dobson, Columnist|Updated Nov 7, 2018

Like most of the rest of the world, I was horrified when a man entered the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, shot and killed 11 people and wounded others. Squirrel Hill is labeled as one of the U.S.’ largest predominantly Jewish neighborhoods. It was also Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood. Ironically, Fred Rogers said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping... Full story

Republican Janemarie Vander Dussen is Curry County's new magistrate court judge. And eastern New Mexico may have a new state representative in Republican Martin Zamora. Vander Dussen received almost 53 percent of the vote to defeat Democrat Nicole Roybal in the judge's race, according to unofficial totals released by county officials late Tuesday. The unofficial vote total was 1,899-1,702. In the state rep contest, unofficial results Tuesday showed Zamora defeated incumbent Democrat George Dodge by 30 votes — 2,973-2,943. The... Full story

  • Williamson: Communities pulling out stops for Veterans Day

    Betty Williamson|Updated Nov 6, 2018

Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice signed to end hostilities in World War I, giving our communities an extra reason to pull out all the stops with at least a dozen Veterans Day activities this year. (See the events calendar for a full listing.) One in Portales will be especially poignant for locals with long ties to the area, an evening-long celebration scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9515, 316 S. Main, Portales. Retired...

  • College hoops: Eighth isn't enough for Hounds

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 6, 2018

PORTALES — The pre-practice scene is boisterous on the Greyhound Arena floor. The members of the Greyhound basketball team are part veteran, part new guy and all loud in voice and actions. As the newest Drake single plays from a player phone through a Bluetooth speaker, players give a quick dance move when they emerge from the arena tunnel and then get in few pre-5 p.m. jumpers. Third-year head coach Tres Segler emerges through the upper level, energy drink in hand, and lets o...

  • College football: Hounds hope to end 2018 on high note

    Peter Stein|Updated Nov 6, 2018

Eastern New Mexico’s football team is looking to go out with a crackle as the regular season ends at home Saturday against Western Oregon. The Greyhounds are 4-6 after last weekend’s 34-17 loss at Angelo State. They faced a brutal early schedule and rebounded late, tearing off a three-game winning streak prior to last Saturday’s loss. They’ll try to end with a victory in this Saturday’s 1 p.m. game at Greyhound Stadium, and they’ll try to get that victory on Senior Day....

  • College basketball: Women hope to continue upward trend

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 6, 2018

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s women’s basketball team is getting an early dose of the friendly confines of Greyhound Arena, with its four-game LSC/RMAC Challenge tournament Friday and Saturday. But it’s fair to say that even before the regular season starts this weekend, the revamped roster is already road tested. Coming off of a fifth-place finish in the Lone Star Conference last season, there was plenty to replace on a roster that returns just four players. “Obviou...

  • College soccer: ENMU women fall short in title game

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 6, 2018

CANYON, Texas — One had Scott. One did not. Plenty more could be said about Sunday’s Lone Star Conference women’s soccer championship, but Trenaday Scott’s two goals spoke loudest in a 2-0 Angelo State win that sent the Rambelles to their first Division II tournament and ended Eastern New Mexico’s best season in program history with a disappointing thud. The Rambelles (12-6-2) received the LSC’s automatic bid into the Division II tournament, return to Canyon Friday to face Col...

  • Clayton: 'Scariest' city in New Mexico

    Union County Leader|Updated Nov 6, 2018

CLAYTON — Hollywood says any publicity is good publicity. Being designated New Mexico’s “scariest town” might not be what Clayton had in mind, but the business owners probably won’t mind if it brings in more tourism. Albuquerque has held the honor, but this year Clayton was voted the top award in a survey by New Mexico Tourism. For believers: • The Herzstein Memorial Museum has a ghostly lady wandering the halls and rooms. • Hotel Eklund has its ghostly lady visiting guests in the halls. • Then there is the Union County Co...
