  • Sunday reader: Trump supporters: 'MAGA is back'

Joshua Green Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 11, 2024

Steve Bannon had been sprung from federal prison only 12 hours earlier, but he had a message to deliver: "MAGA is back." It was a week before Election Day and Bannon, the right-wing podcaster, culture warrior and former chief strategist for Donald Trump, was sitting in a palatial Park Avenue hotel suite, describing how the next Trump presidency would surpass the last one. The entire scene seemed bizarrely improbable. Bannon had just delivered a hardscrabble populist attack to...

  • 8-track age first time we could take our music with us

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Nov 9, 2024

Sometimes I wonder whatever became of my 8-track tapes. I’ve wondered, but not enough to go search the closets at my mother’s house to see if they’re still there. Last I saw it, the collection, prized by me through high school but not all that impressive compared to others, was safely nestled inside the padded, genuine simulated leather case. Cruising in our cars, vans and pickups was my generation’s most important social activity, collecting the music of the day was probabl...

Today is the 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Happy birthday to Marines and their extended families everywhere. In the early 1960s, I matriculated at several Marine Corps bases, both stateside and overseas, while living in open squad bays. Before there were dorms, and rooms for enlisted Marines, there were squad bays that consisted of bunks, foot lockers and wall lockers. In these luxurious environs, we were not exposed to misinformation and disinformation....

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Nov 9, 2024

Recently, online society was outraged over the unnecessary death of a pet squirrel and raccoon. Intelligent people were angry over the absurdity of “saving” animals by killing them. Others said the uproar showed how far society had fallen -- why would anyone care about a squirrel? USA Today reported: The New York Department of Environmental Conservation confiscated Peanut the squirrel from his home in Pine City, N.Y., on Oct. 30 due to “multiple reports from the public about...
